Detty December in Accra: Costs and What to Book Now

Expect Christmas-to-New-Year Accra to cost roughly double a normal trip: travelers report round-trip fares from Washington around $3,500 and hotel rates several times the off-season price. As of late October, book in this order: a refundable room, then flights, then Ghana's US$260 eVisa inside its 90-day window, and event tickets only once organisers announce dates.

What a December trip actually costs

Flights are the biggest line. Travel Noire reported in December 2025 that round trips from Washington Dulles to Accra over the festive period averaged about $3,500, more than double the fare at any other time of year.

Rooms jump the most. The starkest traveler report is a guest whose 11-night Accra stay, booked in March for under $600, was cancelled by the hotel a month before arrival; the same room was then over $4,000 for the festival dates (Travel Noire). For a sense of hotel rates, Travel Noire sampled the cheapest rooms for 26 to 30 December 2024: about $162 a night at The Lennox, $236 at The Cabin Hotel, $300 at Labadi Beach Hotel, $334 at Mövenpick Ambassador, $478 at the Kempinski Gold Coast City and $611 at Number One Oxford Street. Treat those as a floor for 2026, not a quote.

The visa is now a fixed, non-trivial cost. Ghana's eVisa costs US$260 for standard processing, and the fee is the same whatever your nationality (Ghana Immigration Service, checked 21 October 2026). Holders of African passports are handled separately through a free travel authorisation or visa-free entry, so check your route on the portal first.

Getting around costs more too. Ghanaian press reported in December 2025 that Accra drivers were planning festive fare hikes, prompting calls for the city assembly to step in (Ghana News Agency). Ride-hailing is the default for visitors, so budget extra for rides and far more time; our Accra travel guide covers why a 15-minute hop can take 90 minutes.

What to book now, in this order

First, the room, with free cancellation and a direct confirmation. The Travel Noire cancellation story is the recurring warning: an early booking only protects you if the property honours it. Book a refundable rate, then email or message the property directly a few weeks out to confirm it still stands. You'll need this booking anyway, because the eVisa asks for proof of accommodation covering your whole stay; a booking for only part of the trip isn't accepted.

Second, flights. Once the room is fixed, lock the dates. Last season's biggest events clustered between 24 and 31 December, so if the parties aren't the point, arriving or leaving outside that week is the easiest way to soften the fare.

Third, the eVisa, but not too early. Ghana issues single-entry eVisas only, valid for 90 days from the date of issue, and the official guide tells applicants not to apply far in advance. For a trip starting around Christmas, apply from late October onward.

Last, event tickets. These are the one thing not to rush.

The eVisa: timing and paperwork

Apply in November and pay for standard processing. Standard takes 96 hours for US$260; Priority (48 hours) is US$338 and Express (5 hours) is US$442, and fees are generally non-refundable (Ghana eVisa applicant guide). Applying in November leaves room for the portal's requests for extra information without paying for speed.

Have the paperwork ready before you start. The tourist eVisa asks for a passport valid at least six months beyond your departure from Ghana, a recent photo, your onward itinerary, accommodation for the full stay, and a bank or card statement covering the last three months. Applications can't be edited once submitted. A yellow fever vaccination card is also required at the border, and both the eVisa guide and the UK government's advice say so.

The portal launched on 25 May 2026 (VisasNews), so older articles and some government pages still describe the paper process through Ghana's embassies. Go by the portal.

Festival tickets: wait for the organiser

As of 21 October 2026, the big festival dates for this December are not confirmed. AfroFuture's official site, the successor to Afrochella, has not dated a 2026 Accra edition, yet listing sites and tour packages already advertise dates for it and for Detty Rave. Buy only through links on an organiser's own site or channels, and don't build flights around an unannounced date.

Last season shows the shape of the calendar. In 2025 the Ghana Tourism Authority's "December in GH" programme included the Citiuation all-white party and the BHIM Festival on 24 December, Taste the Culture at Independence Square on 26 December, the AfroFuture finale on 28 December and AfroFuture's New Year's Eve party at Labadi Beach Hotel (Citi Newsroom). Rhythm and Brunch, Afro Paradise on 31 December and Mr Eazi's Detty Rave also ran (Africanews). The late-December cluster, roughly 24 to 31 December, is where ticket demand and room prices peak.

Leave room for plans to change. Accra culture site Imullar described the 2025 season as more profit-driven, with paid bookings harder to secure and nights that shifted at short notice. Pick one or two anchor events and keep the rest of the week loose; the guide's hidden gems are a good counterweight to paid-entry nights.

Réponses rapides

When should I book flights for Detty December?

As soon as your room is confirmed. Travelers reported festive-season fares to Accra at more than double the usual price in 2025, and there is no sign of that easing for 2026.

Do I still need a visa for Ghana in December?

Most non-African passport holders do, through the eVisa portal at a flat US$260 for standard processing. The portal makes no mention of a December visa-on-arrival concession, so plan on applying in November and carry your yellow fever card.

How long can I stay on a Ghana eVisa?

You must enter within 90 days of the eVisa being issued, and the officer at the border sets your permitted stay, up to 60 days. Only single-entry eVisas are issued, so a side trip out of Ghana means a new application.

Do African passport holders need the eVisa?

Not the paid one. Holders of African passports traveling for tourism or business either enter visa-free or request a free electronic travel authorisation through the same portal before departure, so check which applies before you fly.
