Ann Arbor on a Football Saturday: Roads, Rooms and the Bag Ban

Plan the whole day around kickoff. Michigan Stadium seats 107,601, the streets beside it close three hours before the game, hotel rooms and dinner tables go early, and bags aren't allowed through the gates at all, clear ones included. The easy version: sleep at a hotel on a shuttle route, ride TheRide's $1.50 FootballRide in, carry only what fits in your pockets, and linger after the final whistle while the roads clear.
Work backward from kickoff
Kickoff sets everything else, and for many games it isn't announced until a week or two out. The Big Ten said in May 2026 that its remaining games would get times six to 12 days beforehand, and the three early home games it did set ranged from noon to 7:30 p.m. (FBSchedules). Book a room you can cancel and keep Saturday night in it: a 7:30 p.m. kickoff ends late, with the whole crowd leaving at once.
Four hours before. Meijer FanFest opens at Pioneer High School, at Stadium and Main, and closes at kickoff, with kids' activities at select games (Ann Arbor with Kids, August 2026). Tailgaters are already set up: Destination Ann Arbor's Tailgating 101 has them arriving around 8:30 a.m. for a noon game and 10:30 or 11 a.m. for a 3:30 p.m. game.
Two hours before. Gates open and the shuttles start running. The free shows outside need no ticket: at 2026 games, fans line the route of the Wolverine Walk as the team heads to the stadium tunnel about 2 hours 15 minutes before kickoff (Michigan Athletics), and the drumline's step show in front of Revelli Hall starts about 90 minutes out.
One hour before. The Michigan Marching Band parades from Revelli Hall to the stadium. For the 7:30 p.m. Michigan State game in 2024, the band's schedule had the step show at 6:00 and the march at 6:30. Following the band can make you miss the start of its pregame show, so peel off early if you want both. Alcohol sales inside the stadium begin an hour before kickoff, and the last shuttle leaves its stop 30 minutes before.
Getting there: shuttle, or park outside the closures
Don't plan on driving up to the stadium: the roads around it close hours before kickoff, so ride the shuttle or park once and walk. The City of Ann Arbor's 2026 game-day page closes South Main Street between Stadium Boulevard and Pauline, plus East Keech Street, from three hours before each game until it ends (southbound Main closes an hour before). New this season, East Hoover Street between South Division and Greene, and Greene south of Hoover, close 90 minutes before kickoff. Street parking rules are enforced from 8 a.m. to midnight, and cars can be towed.
FootballRide is the low-stress option. TheRide's FootballRide runs five routes from hotels, downtown parking structures and two park-and-ride lots, on Miller Road and Plymouth Road, where parking is free but limited. Buses come about every 20 minutes from two hours before kickoff and drop everyone near Gate 2, beside Crisler Center; return buses run for about an hour after the game. Adults pay $1.50 each way or $3 round trip (checked November 2026) by contactless mobile ticket or exact cash; drivers carry no change, and MCard and go!Pass aren't accepted. In 2026, construction moves the Michigan Union, Pizza House and Forest and Church Street stops to one stop on South University near Tappan.
Parking costs real money. Non-permit options include the U-M Golf Course, Ann Arbor Golf & Outing, the Pioneer High School lot and the Hill Street structure; the University's game-day parking page maps them in Waze and is updated as lots fill. A local family guide put 2026 prices at about $40 for U-M structures such as Thompson Street and Hill Street, $65 for the golf course and $80 or more at Pioneer. Pioneer is card-only, and its operator, LAZ Parking, sells non-transferable passes online (Michigan Game Day Parking). The golf courses can close for bad weather, so check that morning. Homeowners near the stadium sell yard spots; ask whether you'll be blocked in. All U-M game-day lots must be empty within two hours of the final whistle, with no overnight parking.

Through the gates with no bag
Michigan Stadium has no clear-bag option: it bans bags outright, including clear bags, purses, fanny packs and crossbody bags (Destination Ann Arbor). Medical and childcare supplies are the exception; carry them in a clear plastic bag and use Gate 3 at the south end or Gate 9 West at the north end.
Blankets, foam seat pads without pockets, rain gear, binoculars without a case and small cameras are allowed; umbrellas, strollers, food, bottles and coolers are not, per FOX 2 Detroit's rundown of the rules. So if rain is forecast, bring a poncho. Seats are bleachers, which makes a foam pad worth carrying, and water is free by the cup at stations around the stadium. Every person needs a ticket, babies included, and ID wristbands for children are available at Gates 2, 4, 8, 9 and 10.
Ticket problems and visiting-team will call are handled inside Crisler Center, through its northeast entry on Stadium Boulevard. SeatGeek is Michigan Athletics' official resale marketplace, and Michigan's season, single-game and group tickets all sold out in 2025.
Rooms, dinner and getting out of town
Book the room first, ideally at a hotel the shuttle stops at, then book dinner. Our Ann Arbor travel guide covers the basics: book months ahead, expect two to three times the usual rate, or stay in Ypsilanti. What it doesn't spell out is that several hotels are FootballRide stops: the Sheraton, the Kensington and the Red Roof Inn U-M South, the Ann Arbor Regent, the DoubleTree North, the Wyndham Garden and Weber's, and downtown the Bell Tower Hotel and the Graduate. Read the booking terms, too. UMS, the local performing-arts presenter, warns that discounted rates can black out and minimum stays can apply on home football weekends, and Ann Arbor hotels add 6% sales tax plus a 5% Ann Arbor hotel occupancy tax.
Dinner needs a reservation. Destination Ann Arbor's football weekend itinerary says to reserve early, especially for Friday, and to go back to the hotel after the game before heading out. Walk-ins are a gamble: on the weekend of the 2013 Notre Dame night game, one AnnArbor.com reader reported waits of more than 45 minutes at five different restaurants. If you're in town but not at the game, use the game itself, when the rest of Ann Arbor gets "eerily quiet," as that piece put it.
Drinks stay inside the lines. Outside the city's Social District, which runs 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. with its own marked to-go cups, open alcohol is prohibited on public streets and sidewalks, and that includes the walk to the stadium.
Leaving takes patience. Destination Ann Arbor's tailgating guide suggests heading back to the tailgate after an early game while traffic clears, and calls the west side of the stadium "a little bit easier to manage" afterward if you're staying that way. What time do the gates open at the Big House?
Gates open two hours before kickoff, and alcohol sales inside start one hour before. FootballRide shuttles start at the same two-hour mark, and the last one leaves its stop 30 minutes before kickoff.
When does Michigan announce kickoff times?
A few are set before the season, but for 2026 the Big Ten said the rest would be announced six to 12 days before each game. Until then, plan for anything from a noon to a 7:30 p.m. start.

In 2026, a local family guide put it at about $40 in U-M parking structures, $65 at the U-M Golf Course and $80 or more at Pioneer High School. The cheapest option is a free park-and-ride lot on Miller Road or Plymouth Road plus a $3 round-trip FootballRide ticket.
Can you drink on the street in Ann Arbor on game day?
