Colosseum Tickets: Which One to Book and When Each Goes on Sale

For most first-timers, the €18 24-hour ticket is the one to book: a timed Colosseum entry plus the Roman Forum and Palatine, and the type with the most availability. Buy it on the official ticketing.colosseo.it the day your date goes on sale, 30 days ahead. The €24 arena, underground and top-tier tickets are much harder to get, and some only go on sale a week out, so treat them as a bonus.

What each ticket actually covers

The standard ticket covers the first two tiers of seating plus the Forum and Palatine; each upgrade adds one restricted area, with its own ticket and time slot. Prices below are the official ones listed by the Parco archeologico del Colosseo on 27 October 2026.

Standard 24-hour ticket, €18. One Colosseum entry at your booked time, plus one entry to the Roman Forum and Palatine any time in the 24 hours before or after it. No arena floor. A long-time Rick Steves forum regular says it usually has the most availability on the official site.

Arena floor: two different tickets. The €18 Only Arena ticket isn't the standard visit plus the floor: you enter and leave on the Sperone Stern side and see only the arena floor, for up to 20 minutes, plus the Forum and Palatine. For the tiers and the floor together, the ticket is the €24 Full Experience Arena, valid for two consecutive days, which only goes on sale seven days ahead.

Underground and arena, €24. The hypogeum beneath the arena floor in a small escorted group, plus the floor, Forum and Palatine over two days; €32 with the Parco's educational tour. These are the scarcest tickets: a Rick Steves forum poster who tried at release three nights running in September 2025 couldn't get one, even working on two computers, and Il Post reported in April 2026 that 96% of underground tickets had been bought under fake names, for resale.

Attic, €24. The highest tiers, looking down into the arena. The Parco is moving Attic visits to groups of up to 25 every 30 minutes, with the panoramic lift kept for visitors with documented reduced mobility, so expect steep steps (its English page dates this from 10 October 2026, the Italian one from 9 November).

Passage of Commodus, €32. A vaulted corridor that linked the emperor's box to the outside, open since October 2025 on Mondays and Wednesdays with the Parco's educational tour, and sold seven days ahead.

Discounts. Under-18s go free, but each needs a named free ticket in the booking; EU citizens aged 18 to 24 pay €2.

How far ahead each one goes on sale

Thirty days ahead for the standard, underground and Attic tickets, seven for the Full Experience Arena and the Passage of Commodus, and the best slots go within minutes either way.

Day 30, slot by slot. The Parco says only that sales open 30 days before the visit. Two Rome-focused blogs, Untold Italy and Mama Loves Rome, describe each entry time going on sale at the same clock time, Rome time: the 10:00 slot opens around 10:00, 30 days earlier. Set an alarm for just before the slot you want; from the Americas, that's the middle of the night.

How fast it goes. In April 2026, a Rick Steves forum poster who was online at 8:00 Rome time reported that "tickets sell out in minutes", and Rome's association of licensed guides said checkout freezes on errors at release, even in low season, according to Il Post. Low season isn't safe either: in early March 2026, a forum poster found Colosseum tickets sold out on all but one day of the next four weeks.

Day 7, the second chance. Since August 2025 the Parco has released some underground slots each day only seven days out, and Mama Loves Rome says a big batch of other tickets usually comes out then too. In May 2026, a forum poster reported landing a 9:50 Attic slot by trying on several devices, "at least partially down to luck".

When the site fights back. Expect a virtual queue, and don't refresh constantly: Mama Loves Rome warns it gets you flagged as a bot. When the site wouldn't accept a ticket quantity in March 2026, clearing cookies and cache and switching browsers fixed it for a forum poster, and a forum regular warns that some US credit cards get declined, so have a second card ready.

The name on the ticket, and the rules at the gate

Every ticket carries the visitor's name, staff check it against photo ID, and since May 2026 you can barely change it.

Names. Enter each name exactly as on that person's passport or ID. For visits from 9 May 2026, the Parco allows one change, by midnight seven days before the visit, and only for an obvious typo, a wrong ticket type or a documented emergency. That targets resellers who, Il Post reported, bought under fake names and switched them to customers' names. If the name doesn't match the ID, you don't get in, and there's no refund. Wanted in Rome advises families who paid full price for under-18s by mistake to email for a refund before the visit.

At the gate. Arrive at least 15 minutes before your slot: everyone goes through airport-style security, tour groups included. The visitor regulations allow 15 minutes' lateness on the standard ticket and none on the Only Arena and Attic tickets; miss the slot and the ticket only covers the Forum and Palatine.

Winter hours. From 25 October 2026 to 28 February 2027, last entry is 15:30 and everything closes at 16:30, with the Forum and Palatine opening at 9:00. Use the 24-hour window: an afternoon Colosseum slot and the Forum the next morning is within the rules.

If your date is sold out

Try the ticket office first thing on the day; resellers and tours cost far more and can fall through.

The ticket office. Since 4 May 2026, standard tickets are sold on site only at the Piazza del Colosseo ticket office, and the Full Experience Arena is also sold at the ticket offices on the day. About 18% of each day's tickets go this way, Il Post reported. In March 2026, a forum poster who couldn't book online arrived for the 8:30 opening, found a short line and got a 9:15 entry, though they expected it to be harder from April to October. Bring your whole group with ID, since the tickets are named.

Resellers and tours. Resale sites charge €33 for the €18 entry with an audio guide, and sometimes up to €100, Il Post and Wanted in Rome reported in April 2026. In April 2025, Italy's competition authority fined the former ticket operator and six resellers and tour companies nearly €20 million over base-price tickets lost to automated bulk-buying. Underground tours are the riskiest: in May 2026, a forum poster's underground tour booked through Viator was cancelled a month ahead, and even established companies warn they may not get tickets; one quoted on the forum promises to tell you at least 14 days before. Read what happens if the tickets don't come through.

Look-alike sites. The only official online shop is ticketing.colosseo.it. At least one unofficial site titled "Official Colosseum Website" links to resellers with affiliate codes, and in April 2026 the Parco warned that Attic tickets sold online for dates when the Attic was closed were a scam.

Forum Pass SUPER, €18. If the Colosseum is gone, this covers the Roman Forum, Palatine and Imperial Fora with no time slot. The March 2026 poster who couldn't get a Colosseum slot online could still buy Forum tickets.

Quick answers

Is the free first Sunday a good way to see the Colosseum?

Only if you're flexible and early. Entry is free on the first Sunday of every month and on 25 April, 2 June and 4 November, but the tickets can't be booked: they're handed out in order of arrival at the Piazza del Colosseo and Largo della Salara Vecchia ticket offices. The arena, the underground and the upper levels stay closed on those days.

Does the Roma Pass let me skip booking the Colosseum?

No. The Roma Pass site lists the Colosseum as "booking required", and Rome tour company Through Eternity notes that pass holders still have to reserve a timed slot. Check that your date has availability before counting on the pass for it.

Is the underground worth chasing?

For most first-timers, no. From the tiers on a standard ticket you can already see down into the exposed underground, and Rick Steves forum regulars routinely tell disappointed posters that skipping it is fine. If it matters to you, try at both release points, 30 and seven days out, and keep a standard ticket as a backup.

Can I see the underground at night?

In summer, yes. The Parco's "A Night at the Colosseum" visits ran from 7 July 2026 into the autumn: about an hour with a guide on the first tier, the arena floor and the underground, in groups of up to 25, for €50. Tickets go on sale only seven days ahead, and only on the official site.

Do I need to print my Colosseum ticket?

No. The ticket comes as a PDF with a QR code, and showing it on your phone is enough, along with photo ID that matches the name on it.

When to go, where to stay, what to skip: the rest is in the Rome, Italy travel guide.
