All-Inclusive or Hip Strip in Montego Bay? Check What's Open

Pick the Hip Strip if you'll spend most days out: you can walk to Doctor's Cave Beach, jerk and bars, and the airport is minutes away. Pick an all-inclusive in Rose Hall or Ironshore if you mainly want a quiet beach and pool with meals and drinks prepaid. Either way, check what's open first: many of the area's big resorts stay closed until December 2026 or into 2027 after Hurricane Melissa.

The deciding question: how often will you leave?

If you'll eat out most days, stay on the Hip Strip; if you'll eat most meals where you sleep, the all-inclusive is the better deal. A Jamaica-born hotel writer at Jamaica Hotel Review describes the usual pattern: most visitors stay in the resorts east of the airport toward Rose Hall and come to the strip "for an afternoon or a night out." From the Iberostar resorts in Rose Hall that's a drive of just over 20 minutes each way, so every outing means a taxi with the fare agreed before you get in. The getting-around section of our guide explains which taxis to use.

The Hip Strip suits short trips of two to four nights, late arrivals and early flights (the S Hotel puts itself five minutes from the airport), and anyone who came for the food: The Pelican Grill, The Pork Pit and Marguerites are all on the strip, and the guide's food and drink picks cover what to order. The trade-off is that the beach costs extra. Doctor's Cave Beach is run by a private bathing club that charges US$8 for adults and US$4 for children under 12, and opens 8:30am to 5:30pm daily (club website, checked October 2026). Some of the strip's smaller hotels, including Toby's and Altamont West, aren't on the beach at all. Harmony Beach Park, a short taxi ride away, is free.

An all-inclusive suits a week of downtime, travelers who want a pool and beach a few steps from the room, and anyone who would rather not deal with taxis and vendors every day. It only pays off if you actually eat and drink there. Book one and then take a taxi to Scotchies or the Hip Strip every night, and you're paying twice.

What the Hip Strip is like in late 2026

Mostly back, still patchy, and still full of hustle. The strip, renamed Jimmy Cliff Boulevard though many addresses still say Gloucester Avenue, was "a picture of destruction" in early November 2025, the Jamaica Observer reported. The S Hotel says it took no damage, and its post-storm update put more than 70 percent of the strip's shops back open, though that is the hotel's own figure. Two gaps matter if you're basing yourself here: Grand Decameron Montego Beach, the strip's big all-inclusive, is still listed as closed by the Jamaica Tourist Board, and Jamaica Hotel Review lists the Aquasol beach park as closed.

Places to stay on or just off the strip that the tourist board lists as open (checked 30 October 2026) include the S Hotel, beside Doctor's Cave Beach, which stayed open through the hurricane at full capacity, according to Travel Market Report. Toby's Resort has 65 rooms on Kent Avenue, at the start of the strip just off Gloucester Avenue. Altamont West has 31 rooms at the quieter south end of Gloucester Avenue, though Oyster's review warns the road outside is busy and loud. Deja Resort, sold on booking sites as an all-inclusive on Gloucester Avenue, is listed as open too.

Expect vendors. The local advice is a polite "no thanks" and keep walking. After dark, stay where it's busy and take a taxi back rather than walking long dark stretches to your hotel.

Which Rose Hall and Ironshore resorts are open

Fewer than older hotel lists suggest. The Caribbean Council counted 12 major hotels shut in Montego Bay alone after the storm, and as of 30 October 2026 the Jamaica Tourist Board's status page still shows many of the big resort names as closed.

Open now: Iberostar's three Rose Hall hotels (Selection Rose Hall Suites, Waves Rose Hall Beach and the adults-only JOIA Rose Hall), all marked as taking bookings. Riu Montego Bay, Riu Palace Jamaica and Riu Reggae are open; Riu Montego Bay, on Mahoe Bay 2.7 km from the airport, reopened on 23 November 2025. Half Moon reopened its Eclipse hotel and villas in April 2026 and expects its historic Founders Cove rooms back by Thanksgiving.

Closed until 18 December 2026: Sandals Montego Bay and Sandals Royal Caribbean, which are part of a US$200 million overhaul of three Jamaican Sandals resorts, Caribbean Journal reports.

Closed into 2027: Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara Rose Hall, Dreams Rose Hall, Breathless, Secrets St. James, Secrets Wild Orchid and Jewel Grande. Hyatt's working target is the first quarter of 2027, and in April it said guests with existing bookings could cancel without penalty. The tourist board also lists Catalonia Montego Bay as closed.

Treat reopening dates as soft. In January 2026, The Globe and Mail reported the two Montego Bay Sandals closed until the end of May and seven Hyatt hotels shut until November; both dates have since moved. If your resort is due back this winter, book a refundable rate and check the hotel's own status page shortly before you fly, as the where-to-stay section of our Montego Bay travel guide advises.

Safety: a wristband isn't a force field

Resorts are guarded and the Hip Strip is a busy tourist zone, so the bigger day-to-day difference is hassle and getting home after dark. The UK Foreign Office says tourist areas "are not usually affected by gang-related crime and violence" and that most hotels and resorts are well guarded, though burglaries can occur.

Don't treat the resort gate as full protection, though. The US State Department's January 2026 advisory says the embassy "routinely receives reports of sexual assaults, including from U.S. citizen tourists at resorts," and the UK notes reports of rape and sexual assault in tourist areas, including beach resorts, in many cases by someone the victim had met socially at a bar, hotel, beach or excursion. The practical rules are the same at both bases: licensed taxis, no walking or buses at night, and caution with people you've just met.

If a cheaper rental tempts you instead, check its address against the neighborhoods the UK flags, such as Flankers and Mount Salem, which are listed in our Montego Bay travel guide.

Can't decide? Split the stay

Spend a night or two on the Hip Strip and the rest at a resort, and you get both. The strip works best at the start or end of a trip, since it's minutes from the airport: stay there after a late arrival or before an early flight home, and save the resort for the beach days in between.

Quick answers

Is there an all-inclusive on the Hip Strip?

Not a big one right now. The Jamaica Tourist Board lists Grand Decameron Montego Beach, the strip's large all-inclusive, as closed, with no confirmed reopening date. Deja Resort, sold on booking sites as an all-inclusive on Gloucester Avenue, is listed as open.

How far are the Rose Hall resorts from the Hip Strip?

The Iberostar complex in Rose Hall is just over a 20-minute drive from the strip. Riu Montego Bay, on Mahoe Bay in Ironshore, is 2.7 km from the airport. Either way, plan on a taxi for each outing and agree the fare before you set off.

When do Sandals Montego Bay and the Hyatt resorts reopen?

Sandals Montego Bay and Sandals Royal Caribbean are due back on 18 December 2026. Hyatt's seven resorts in the Montego Bay and Rose Hall area, including Hyatt Ziva and Zilara, Secrets and Dreams, are targeting the first quarter of 2027. Both timelines have already slipped at least once, so book refundable rates.

How much does Doctor's Cave Beach cost?

The Doctor's Cave Bathing Club charges US$8 for adults and US$4 for children under 12 (checked October 2026), and it opens 8:30am to 5:30pm daily. Harmony Beach Park, a short taxi ride away, costs nothing to enter.

Is the Hip Strip safe to walk at night?

Stay where it's busy and take a licensed taxi back rather than walking dark stretches to your hotel, which is the standard local advice. The UK Foreign Office advises visitors to avoid walking at night, so budget for taxis after dinner.

When to go, where to stay, what to skip: the rest is in the Montego Bay, Jamaica travel guide.
