Table Mountain Cable Car or Hike? How to Plan Around the Wind

Take the cable car if you want the views without the climb: an adult return bought online costs R475 (October 2026). Hike Platteklip Gorge only if you're fit, have company and can start at first light, because the climb is steep and its lower half has no shade. Either way the wind has the final say, so buy a ticket valid for seven days and go up on the first clear, calm morning.

The cable car: cost, hours and queues

The cable car is the easy option, and the only sensible one for small children, bad knees or a tight schedule, but it runs only when the weather allows.

What it costs. The cableway's 2026–27 rate card lists an online adult return at R475 and a one-way at R300, against R530 and R330 at the ticket office. Fast Track, which books a time slot and skips the queue, costs R1,200 return.

The seven-day rule. Standard tickets are valid for seven days, and if the weather shuts the cableway you can use yours on the next open day that week or claim a refund through Webtickets, the official ticketing agency. Buy there or from City Sightseeing: the cableway says tickets bought on other websites aren't valid.

When it runs. The first car goes up at 07:30 from November to April and at 08:30 from May to October. The last car down leaves at 21:00 in December and January and at 18:00 from May to August, with times in between for the rest of the year (operating hours).

Queues. A standard ticket doesn't get you past the line on busy days. In December 2024 a tour guide told the Cape Argus their group had waited three hours; the cableway blamed roadworks on Tafelberg Road. The operator says afternoons are quieter, but in summer that's also when the wind tends to rise, so a shorter line comes with a higher chance of closure.

Getting there. Ask your Uber for the Lower Tafelberg Road bus stop, or park in the free lot there, and take the free shuttle to the lower station. On top, staff lead free 30-minute walks on the hour from 09:00 to 15:00, and Maclear's Beacon, the highest point at 1,085 m, is a 90-minute to two-hour round trip on foot.

Hiking up: Platteklip Gorge, and the routes to leave alone

For a first ascent, take Platteklip Gorge: the guiding company Cape Trekking calls it the choice route for less experienced hikers, and it tops out a short walk from the upper cable station.

The route. It starts on Tafelberg Road about 1.5 km past the lower cable station and climbs about 650 m on footpaths, rock steps and boulders, ending about 700 m from the upper station. Cape Town Tourism rates it 3 out of 5.

How long. The hiking blog Stingy Nomads gives 1 to 1.5 hours for the climb, while Cape Trekking puts the average at about 2.5 hours and tells clients to allow 3 to 4 hours including the cable car down. Walking down is quicker but hard on the knees, and SANParks reminds hikers that climbing down is more difficult than climbing up.

Heat. The lower half is in full sun and there's no water on the trail. Hike Table Mountain, a local guiding company, says heat exhaustion is a common cause of rescues and that even a 07:30 start in December or January can make for a tough climb, so its guides set off around sunrise.

Routes to skip. Cape Town Tourism calls India Venster one of the most challenging and dangerous routes up, with chains and ladders, and says it isn't suitable for children or elderly hikers. Skeleton Gorge, from Kirstenbosch, has wooden ladders and tops out near the Hely-Hutchinson Reservoir, up to two hours' walk from the cable car.

Safety. The first of SANParks' hiking rules, written because of attacks and muggings in the park, is "Don't hike alone; four is the ideal number." Start early, tell someone your route, carry a waterproof layer even in midsummer and keep phones out of sight. Save the park's emergency line, 086 110 6417, and Wilderness Search and Rescue, 021 937 0300.

When the weather lets you up

Wind is what to plan around: in a statement reproduced in 2018, the cableway put its wind closures at 60 to 90 days a year, and in summer the wind usually builds after midday.

The south-easter and the tablecloth. From late October to early February the south-easter blows often, and Hike Table Mountain says it typically picks up around noon and peaks in the early evening. It also brings the tablecloth, the cloud that pours over the summit and hides the views, so a clear morning can become a cold, damp afternoon on top. The wind is stronger up there than it feels in town.

When the hooter sounds. When high winds are coming, a hooter sounds and everyone on top is told to return to the upper station at once, because it's about to close. Anyone who arrives after that walks down. In January 2026, rescuers walked four stranded international hikers down Platteklip in the dark after strong winds disrupted the cableway. In February 2026, two hikers who had planned to ride down found the cableway suspended, tried India Venster instead, lost the route and needed a rope rescue from a ledge above Camps Bay, the Cape Argus reported. Before you start up, check the cableway is running, carry enough food, water and warm clothes to walk back down, and if it closes, go down the way you came.

Which months. Local guides say the most reliable weather comes in March, April, May and September. Winter, June to August, brings rain and north-westerly gales, the shortest operating hours, and the annual maintenance shutdown, which in 2026 ran from 27 July to 9 August while the trails stayed open.

Checking on the day. The cableway's homepage opens with a banner showing the day's weather, visibility, wind and waiting times at both stations; the official app has real-time weather updates, and the info line is 021 424 8181. Check before you leave your hotel and again at the trailhead.

So which should you choose?

Ride the cable car unless you're fit, up at dawn and ready to walk down if the wind wins.

Ride both ways with small children, bad knees, a hot day or only a few hours, or for sunset from the top: in December and January the last car comes down at 21:00. Even SANParks says that if it's the views you're after rather than the exercise, take the cable car.

Hike up, ride down if you're fit and in a group: start at first light, buy a one-way ticket online and check the status again at the trailhead.

Leave slack in your trip. Hike Table Mountain suggests putting the mountain on one of your first days so there are spare days if the weather turns, and a seven-day ticket gives the cable car the same flexibility. The guide's itineraries put the cableway on day two; swap it for whichever day dawns clear and calm. For where to stay, getting around and the rest of the city, see our Cape Town travel guide.

Quick answers

How much does the Table Mountain cable car cost?

On the rate card for 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, an adult return bought online costs R475 and a one-way R300; at the ticket office they're R530 and R330. Children aged 4 to 17 pay R230 return online, under-4s ride free, and students with a card pay R320 return at the ticket office.

Can you hike up Table Mountain and take the cable car down?

Yes: buy a one-way ticket online for R300 and ride down from the upper station. Check that the cableway is running before you start, because if the wind closes it while you're climbing, the way down is on foot, ideally by the route you came up.

What happens if the cableway closes while you're on top?

A hooter sounds and everyone is told to return to the upper station straight away, before it shuts. Head back as soon as you hear it, even if you're partway to Maclear's Beacon, because if you miss the last car the only way down is on foot.

How long does it take to hike up Table Mountain?

On Platteklip Gorge, estimates run from 1 to 1.5 hours for fit hikers to about 2.5 hours on average. Allow 3 to 4 hours in total if you ride the cable car down, and longer if you walk.

Is it worth going up when the tablecloth is on?

Not for the view: the cloud sits on the summit, hides the city and makes it cold and damp up there. Local guides point out that a cloudy summit has its own appeal, but with a seven-day ticket you can wait for a clearer morning.

When does the cable car close for maintenance?

The cableway closes once a year for maintenance; in 2026 that was 27 July to 9 August. The trails stayed open, but with no cars running hikers had to walk down, so check the cableway's blog before a July or August trip.
