Taj Mahal Tickets and Timing: Beat the Queues at Dawn

Book the official e-ticket a day or two ahead, skip Fridays, and be at the East Gate before it opens, roughly half an hour before sunrise. That first hour is the calmest the Taj gets. Most of the crush comes later: weekend crowds peak from late morning to late afternoon, and the free-entry days for Urs and Eid draw the biggest crowds of the year.
Which ticket to buy, and where
Buy the foreigner ticket online, and add the ₹200 mausoleum ticket if you want to go inside the tomb itself. The official Taj Mahal site lists ₹1,100 for foreign visitors, ₹540 for SAARC and BIMSTEC citizens and ₹50 for Indian citizens and OCI cardholders. The ₹200 mausoleum ticket is extra for everyone, and under-15s get in free. The ASI's Agra Circle site links its "Online Ticket Booking" to asi.payumoney.com, and the official visiting-hours page says online buyers get ₹50 off each foreigner ticket. These prices matched our Agra & Taj Mahal guide when checked in October 2026.
What the foreigner ticket includes. The ticket covers shoe covers, a half-litre water bottle, a city map and the battery bus or golf cart from the parking areas to the gate. Polluting vehicles aren't allowed within 500 metres of the monument, so that shuttle actually matters.
Bring photo ID. The ticketing page says visitors must carry a government-issued photo ID, so carry your passport even if your ticket is on your phone.
Travelers say the booking site can be clunky. One traveler who booked through asi.payumoney.com called it "rustic" and said a purchase can take two or three tries. That's a reason to buy the day before rather than on the walk to the gate.
Use the same ticket for Agra Fort. The official chart lists a lower "after visiting Taj" price for foreigners at Agra Fort (₹600 instead of ₹650) and at Fatehpur Sikri (₹600 instead of ₹610). It doesn't say how long that discount lasts, so plan the Fort for the same day.
What time the gates open, month by month
The monument opens 30 minutes before sunrise, and the East and West Gate ticket windows open an hour before sunrise. Sunrise in Agra moves a lot through the year. In late October 2026 it's about 6:22 a.m., so the gates open around 5:50. By mid-January it's about 7:10 a.m., and in June it's about 5:25 a.m. Check the sunrise time for your exact date and work backwards. The Southern Gate is exit-only, so it's no use for an early start.
How fast the queue builds at dawn
The line at the East Gate grows quickly in the half hour before opening. One traveler who reached the East Gate at 5:30 a.m. in October 2019 counted about 20 people, more than 100 by 5:40 and about 250 by 6:00. The official tourism site and UK operator TransIndus both point visitors to the East Gate. TransIndus says its approaches are "marginally less cluttered and the crowds thinner" and has guests leave their hotels at 5:30 a.m. for a 6 a.m. opening. Foreign and domestic visitors use separate queues, and signs point you to the right one.
Pack light to get through security fast. The official dos and don'ts list bans food (even toffees), tobacco, headphones, mobile chargers, electrical goods other than cameras, tripods and drones. It also warns that big bags and books slow down the security check. Phones must be off or on silent, and photos aren't allowed inside the mausoleum.
Days to avoid
Fridays are the obvious one, but they aren't the only problem days. The Taj is closed to general visitors every Friday. Beyond that, these are the dates when it's hardest to see.
Weekends after mid-morning. Agra paper Amar Ujala reported more than 31,000 visitors on Saturday, 15 November 2025. Queues for the ticket window and turnstiles took about an hour, crowds stayed heavy from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and some visitors gave up and went to other monuments. Arriving at dawn on a weekend is fine. Arriving at noon is the mistake.
The Urs. Entry is free for three days for Shah Jahan's Urs. In 2026 it ran 15 to 17 January, free from 2 p.m. to sunset on the first two days and all day on the third, with ticket counters closed, Aaj Tak reported. The dates follow the Islamic calendar, so they move earlier each year. Check the ASI's notice before booking a January trip.
Eid mornings. On Eid-ul-Adha in May 2026, entry was free from 7 to 10 a.m. for people attending prayers at the mosque inside the complex. The ₹200 mausoleum ticket still applied. Expect that window to be busy rather than quiet.
Foggy dawns from late December to January. On a bad morning the sunrise can be a white wall. In late December 2023, dense fog hid the Taj from its main viewpoints, and forecasters expected fog in the mornings and evenings with sunshine in the afternoons. TransIndus says fog can come at any time from late November to February, and it suggests switching to a later visit when river mist is forecast. In those months, keep a backup slot on a second day.
The three-hour limit
Plan to be done within three hours, because an entry ticket has been treated as a three-hour pass since 2019. Outlook Traveller reported in July 2019 that turnstiles at the east and west gates and exits enforce it, and that anyone who overstays pays an extra fee at the exit. The same report said ticket sales stop at 40,000 a day. Recent reports confirming how strictly this is enforced are hard to find. Three hours is plenty for the gardens, the mosque and the mausoleum if you start at opening, and you'll be out before the late-morning rush arrives.

Quick answers
Can I buy Taj Mahal tickets at the gate?
Yes. Ticket windows at the East and West Gates open an hour before sunrise and close 45 minutes before sunset. Buying online saves ₹50 on a foreigner ticket and keeps you out of the ticket-window line, which travelers and local press both say gets long on busy days.
Is the ₹200 mausoleum ticket worth it?
It's the only way into the tomb chamber itself, and without it you see the Taj from the gardens and plinth. You can't take photos inside the mausoleum, so the payoff is the interior, not pictures. Most first-time visitors buy it, since it's small next to the main fee.
Is the Taj Mahal ever free to enter?
Yes, on a few days a year: during Shah Jahan's Urs (15 to 17 January in 2026, with set hours) and for a few morning hours on Eid for people attending prayers. Those are among the busiest times to visit, and on Eid the mausoleum ticket still applies.
Can I bring a tripod or a drone?
No. The official rules ban tripods, and drones are banned inside and around the Taj Mahal. Still cameras are fine in the gardens, but not inside the mausoleum.
When to go, where to stay, what to skip: the rest is in the Agra & the Taj Mahal, India travel guide.
