For a first trip, stay in Back Bay or around Beacon Hill and Downtown: the big sights are walkable and several T lines meet there. Choose the Seaport for hotel pools or a convention there, Fenway–Kenmore for ballgames and the big museums, Cambridge for campus visits, and Brookline or Allston to spend less. Wherever you book, stay a short walk from a T station.
First trip: Back Bay, Beacon Hill or Downtown
Back Bay is the safe default, and Beacon Hill or Downtown put you closer to the Freedom Trail.
Back Bay. Brownstones, Newbury Street and the Public Garden, with Green Line stops at Arlington, Copley, Hynes and Prudential, and the Orange Line at Back Bay station. Local writers rate it the best all-round base. The complaints are price (Nomadic Matt, who grew up in Boston, says it's "hard to find a super cheap place") and sameness: it's "full of chains upon chains," says Adventurous Kate, a blogger who also grew up around the city.
Beacon Hill. Gaslit and central, but steep. Kate warns it's hard going with a stroller or limited mobility, and she urges visitors not to stay there in winter.
Downtown and the Financial District. You're on the Freedom Trail, near Park Street and Downtown Crossing, where the Red, Green and Orange lines meet. The catch is evenings: Kate calls Downtown Crossing and the Financial District "deserted at night." The upside, according to the walking-tour company Free Tours by Foot, is that business hotels may be cheaper at weekends.
The Aquarium waterfront. When a couple asked r/boston in April 2026 about splurging on a Seaport hotel, several commenters steered them to Long Wharf and the hotels by the New England Aquarium instead, or to Back Bay or Beacon Hill for "a much better vibe." Ferries from the Charlestown Navy Yard and from Logan Airport both dock at Long Wharf.
Families and conventions: the Seaport
The Seaport suits families who want a hotel pool and anyone at a convention there, but it's the priciest base and the one r/boston likes least.
Pools and kids. Nomadic Matt points to the Aloft Boston Seaport and the Seaport Hotel, both with indoor pools, and Free Tours by Foot picks the Seaport Hotel for families, with the Boston Children's Museum nearby. Kate's verdict is blunt: the neighborhood is "extremely expensive." The bigger complaint on r/boston is character; one commenter called it "a weird fake neighborhood," which matches our guide's note that it has less street life than the older districts.
Check which convention center. Boston has two. The MCEC (long known as the BCEC) is in the Seaport and connects to the Westin Boston Seaport District. The Hynes is in Back Bay, connected to the Boston Marriott Copley Place, the Sheraton Boston and the Westin Copley Place. Book near the right one.
Food, ballgames and campuses
Pick the South End for food, Fenway–Kenmore for the Red Sox and the big museums, and Cambridge when a campus is the reason for the trip.
South End. Victorian houses and some of the city's best restaurants, including Myers + Chang from our guide, with Wally's Cafe Jazz Club at its edge. Kate likes it for feeling local, since "most tourists don't even step within its borders"; the trade-off is that the walk to the T depends on your block. Her budget pick there is Staypineapple.
Fenway–Kenmore. Fenway Park, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Gardner are all close, with the Green Line at Kenmore. Expect noise on game nights: Kate says fans keep shouting and partying long after the final out, which she calls "more of a noise issue than a safety issue." Her picks run from Hotel Commonwealth at the top end to the Oasis Guest House on a budget.
Cambridge. Harvard Square has the Charles Hotel at the top end; Nomadic Matt rates the Porter Square Hotel "one of the more affordable" and Irving House as a quiet budget B&B. Free Tours by Foot says Cambridge hotels "can be slightly cheaper" than downtown Boston's, and the Red Line gets you downtown in 10 to 15 minutes. Kate's caution is that it feels "a bit separate from Boston, despite its transit connections," so it works best when a campus, not the Freedom Trail, is the point.
Budget stays that don't strand you
Boston has no cheap neighborhood, so save by giving up a private bathroom or a central address, not a short walk to the T.
The baseline is steep. In a Cheaphotels.org survey, the cheapest centrally located double room in a three-star-or-better hotel averaged $375 a night in Boston in October 2025, the highest of 100 cities and ahead of New York's $338.
Hostels and guesthouses. Nomadic Matt and Kate both list the HI Boston hostel downtown, and Kate adds Found Hotel Boston Common. In Allston, a student area with cheaper bars and little to see, Nomadic Matt likes the Farrington Inn, which has shared-bathroom rooms. Brookline, Nomadic Matt's pick for families, "can often be cheaper" though it feels suburban, Kate says; she suggests taking a shared bathroom at the Coolidge Corner Guest House to cut the rate.
Near the airport. Free Tours by Foot says airport hotels are "likely to be less expensive than downtown," and a free Massport shuttle links the terminals to the Blue Line, which reaches downtown at State and Government Center. Kate's caution is that there's little for visitors around them.
Read the address, not the name. Kate warns that hotels named "Boston-Burlington" or "Boston-Woburn" are "DEEP in the suburbs," and that hotels in Newton, Malden, Quincy and Revere are only sometimes close to the T. Likewise, a bargain near Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard sits by "Mass and Cass," long the focus of the city's addiction and homelessness crisis. WBUR found the sidewalks there "mostly clear" in October 2025, two years after the city cleared the tent encampment, though residents said people had scattered into nearby streets. Read recent reviews and check the walk to the T before booking there.
Whole-apartment rentals are scarce. Boston only allows short-term rentals in owner-occupied buildings, so a whole-apartment listing has to be the owner's own home or a unit in a two- or three-family house the owner lives in.
Your dates matter as much as the neighborhood
A few dates fill Boston's hotels, and each hits a different part of town hardest.
Marathon weekend. The 131st Boston Marathon is on Monday 19 April 2027, and the finish line is on Boylston Street in Back Bay. For the 2026 race weekend, the city restricted stopping and parking on Boylston, Newbury, Dartmouth and Exeter streets, with no stopping on part of Boylston by Copley Square from 9 to 24 April. If you aren't running or watching, Back Bay is the wrong base that week.
Graduation season. Commencement crowds hit Cambridge in May. When Cambridge Day checked one-night rates for 22 and 30 May 2024, the Harvard Square Hotel was sold out on both nights, the Charles Hotel wanted $879 for 30 May, and the cheapest room it found was $309 at the Studio Allston Hotel.
October. The guide's best month is also peak pricing: the survey above covered October, when prices in most cities tend to peak, and the Head of the Charles Regatta (16 to 18 October in 2026) is credited with bringing about 225,000 people to Greater Boston. Book early, and check the guide's when-to-go section for the rest of the calendar.
Once you've picked a base, our Boston travel guide covers what to do around it, from the Freedom Trail to the harbor islands, and its getting-around section explains when the T stops running.

Can you still rent an Airbnb in Boston?
Yes, within limits. Boston allows short-term rentals, meaning stays of fewer than 28 nights, only in owner-occupied condos and one- to three-family buildings, and every listing must show a city registration number. Under a 2019 settlement, Airbnb removes listings the city flags if the host doesn't register within 30 days.
How much tax is added to a Boston hotel bill?
Boston's room taxes add 14.95% to the rate. Hotels with 50 or more rooms in Boston and Cambridge also owe a 1.5% tourism-district assessment, which they can pass on as its own line on your bill, bringing the total to 16.45%. Smaller guesthouses aren't covered by the assessment.
Is it cheaper to stay in Cambridge than in Boston?
Sometimes, by a little: Free Tours by Foot says Cambridge hotels can be slightly cheaper than downtown Boston's, and the Red Line has you downtown in 10 to 15 minutes. Late May is the exception, when commencement fills Harvard Square; in 2024 Cambridge Day found hotels there sold out or charging up to $879 a night.
How close to the T should you stay?
Close enough to walk to a station without planning around it. "Be near the T and the city will be in your hands," as Adventurous Kate puts it. The T stops running between about 12:30 and 1 in the morning, so budget for a rideshare after a late night across town.
