Bávaro, for most first trips: it has the widest choice of resorts and prices, gentler water than the north and cheap Uber rides to the restaurants of Los Corales. Pick Cap Cana for calm, shallow Juanillo beach and a short airport run, if the higher rates fit. Pick Uvero Alto only if you'll stay on the resort: it's 40 to 60 minutes out, with rough surf and costly rides.
Bávaro: the easiest base, and the easiest to leave
Bávaro is the classic all-inclusive strip, and the best base if you want choice, gentler swimming and the option to eat out.
Getting there. Grand Bay of the Sea, a local dive shop, puts the transfer from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) at 15 to 30 minutes. In January 2026, Punta Cana Travel Blog, written by a resident, priced the ride to a Bávaro resort at about US$16 by UberX, US$26 by Uber Select and US$30 by official taxi or pre-booked transfer.
Getting out. This is where Bávaro wins. Grand Bay puts short hops within Bávaro at US$6 to US$8 by Uber, against US$10 to US$20 by taxi, and calls El Cortecito "the closest thing Punta Cana has to a walkable tourist strip." For where to eat there, see the food section of our Punta Cana guide. On a tighter budget or a stay of more than a week, Grand Bay points to El Cortecito and Arena Gorda, both part of Bávaro, for cheaper hotels, apartments and Airbnbs.
The water. Bávaro's sea is generally gentler than Uvero Alto's. Oyster's hotel reviewers, who say the ocean at the Nickelodeon resort in Uvero Alto is often too rough for kids, point families to the Family Club at Barceló Bávaro Palace Deluxe for "a calmer beach" at lower rates. The catch is seaweed. Grand Bay calls Bávaro the worst-hit area in peak sargassum season, May to August, because the beach faces east, and in July 2026 the Dominican magazine Revista Mercado reported some of the season's heaviest accumulations in Bávaro and Punta Cana. Beachfront resorts clear it daily with tractors, the magazine noted, while some public stretches stay covered longer, so a summer apartment in Los Corales may come with a messier beach.
Cap Cana: calm water and quiet, at a price
Cap Cana suits travelers who want a polished resort, calm water and a short transfer, and who don't mind paying more and riding to everything else.
Getting there. It's one of the shortest airport runs: Grand Bay puts it at 15 to 25 minutes, and Punta Cana Travel Blog's January 2026 table priced it at about US$15 by UberX and US$30 by official taxi.
The beach. Juanillo is Cap Cana's main resort beach. Caribbean Journal described its water as "calm and shallow, perfect for beginning swimmers," and Grand Bay says an offshore reef partly shelters it and it often gets less sargassum than Bávaro, "though no beach is immune in peak months." The gate works in guests' favor: in 2021 Caribbean Journal reported that non-guests had to leave ID with the guard at the main entrance, and called Juanillo "practically a private beach for Cap Cana guests." The Dominican tourism ministry lists bars and restaurants on the sand, plus kayaking, snorkeling and kiteboarding.
The trade-offs. You pay for the quiet. Grand Bay says Cap Cana resorts generally start at higher rates than comparable Bávaro properties, that there are no budget options, and that you can't really walk to independent restaurants or nightlife from most of them. Rides out cost more, too. Grand Bay prices the trip from Bávaro to Cap Cana at US$15 to US$25 by Uber or US$40 to US$60 by taxi, and Punta Cana Travel Blog warns that UberX pickups in Cap Cana are hard to get, so you may end up on Uber Select, which uses local taxis and costs roughly 2.5 times as much.
Uvero Alto: seclusion and surf, a long way out
Uvero Alto is for travelers who want a big resort on a wild, quiet beach and plan to stay there, not for anyone who wants to swim in the sea with small children or go out most nights.
Getting there. It's the farthest of the three. Grand Bay puts the airport transfer at 40 to 60 minutes, and the Excellence Punta Cana resort's own FAQ says about 45. Punta Cana Travel Blog's January 2026 prices from the airport were about US$30 by UberX, US$53 by Uber Select, US$60 pre-booked and US$70 by official taxi. Arrival and departure together can take up to two hours, against under an hour from Cap Cana.
The sea. Expect waves. The Dominican tourism ministry describes Uvero Alto's "wild waves that are perfect for body boarding fun, and surfing in some parts," and warns that "swimming here requires caution because of the undertow, particularly along deserted stretches away from resorts." The family travel blog Always Bring Sunscreen, in a 2019 post, found the surf "more like the Atlantic Ocean than the Caribbean Sea," with strong currents and plenty of seaweed. Don't pick Uvero Alto to dodge sargassum, either: Grand Bay notes that it is still east-facing and hit in peak season.
Getting out. Leaving costs the most here. Grand Bay prices a taxi between Bávaro and Uvero Alto at US$60 to US$70, and Punta Cana Travel Blog says UberX pickups in the area are difficult. Even Grand Bay's own dive pickups cost US$70 a day from Uvero Alto and US$50 from Cap Cana, against nothing from Bávaro. That's why the where-to-stay advice in our guide is to plan on staying put or booking tours.
Who it suits. Mostly couples after quiet. Grand Bay pitches Uvero Alto at "travelers who want a more secluded, remote-feeling luxury experience" and notes that it has fewer mid-tier options than Bávaro. There are adults-only choices: Excellence Punta Cana, for one, accepts only guests 18 and over.
Which area for which trip
Decide by how you'll spend your days: in the sea, by the pool or out exploring.
Young children. Bávaro or Cap Cana, for gentler water; in Uvero Alto, plan on the pool. Anywhere on this coast, obey the warning flags. Canada's travel advice says many Dominican beaches have limited or no lifeguards, that tidal changes and strong winds can cause dangerous riptides, and that "several drownings occur every year."
Three or four nights. Cap Cana or Bávaro, both within half an hour of the airport, so you don't spend a beach afternoon in a van.
Eating out and day trips. Bávaro, ideally near Los Corales, with Uber for short hops and guaguas from Friusa for Higüey and La Romana. The getting-around section of the guide has the fares.
Quiet for two. Uvero Alto, if you'll accept the long transfer and mostly staying in. Cap Cana, if you want quiet with calm water and a shorter ride.
A tight budget or a long stay. Bávaro. Grand Bay notes there are no budget options in Cap Cana, and fewer mid-tier ones in Uvero Alto.
June to August. Sargassum reaches all three, though Juanillo in Cap Cana often gets less. The guide's skip-or-swap tips name the beaches to escape to.
Somewhere in between. Grand Bay suggests Cabeza de Toro, 20 to 30 minutes from the airport, for repeat visitors "who found Bávaro too much," and Punta Cana Village, 10 to 15 minutes out, for independent travelers who don't want an all-inclusive. For where to eat, what to skip and the day trips worth leaving the resort for, see our Punta Cana travel guide.

Kurze Antworten
Which part of Punta Cana has the calmest water for young kids?
Cap Cana's Juanillo beach is the best bet: Caribbean Journal described its water as calm and shallow, and a local dive shop says an offshore reef partly shelters it. Bávaro is generally gentler than the north, while in Uvero Alto, Oyster's reviewers say the sea at the Nickelodeon resort is often too rough for kids. Wherever you stay, swim only where the warning flags allow it.
Is Cap Cana worth paying more for?
Yes, if calm water, quiet and a short airport run matter more to you than eating out. Grand Bay of the Sea says Cap Cana resorts generally start at higher rates than comparable Bávaro ones, with no budget options, and from most of them independent restaurants are a ride away. If you plan to eat out most nights, Bávaro gives you more for the money.
Where can I stay in Punta Cana without an all-inclusive?
Los Corales and El Cortecito in Bávaro have apartments, small hotels and Airbnbs within walking distance of restaurants and a public beach, and Uber works well there. Grand Bay of the Sea also suggests Punta Cana Village, 10 to 15 minutes from the airport, for independent travelers who don't want an all-inclusive.
Can you surf or bodyboard in Uvero Alto?
Yes: the Dominican tourism ministry describes "wild waves" there that suit bodyboarding, with surfing in some parts. The same page warns about the undertow, especially on deserted stretches away from the resorts, so stay close to shore near your hotel and follow the flags.

I haven't been to Punta Cana yet. This article is built from a Punta Cana resident's travel blog, a local dive shop's area and transport guides, the Dominican Republic's official tourism site, Dominican and Caribbean press, a resort's own FAQ, Oyster's hotel reviews, a family travel blog and the Canadian government's travel advice, checked on 29 October 2026. The ride prices come from posts dated January to July 2026, so confirm them before you go. Sources disagree on how well Uber works in Cap Cana and Uvero Alto; I've gone with the resident's more cautious view.
