Überblick

Agra is the former Mughal capital on the Yamuna, about 204 km from Delhi, and home to three UNESCO sites: the , and (UP Tourism). Many visitors arrive on a rushed day trip, which is exactly when the Taj is at its most crowded.

This guide is for travelers who want two things: to see the Taj without the worst of the crowds, and to understand what they are looking at. Agra also lets you trace Mughal architecture in order, from a ruined 1530 mosque and Babur's riverside garden to Akbar's red sandstone, the first all-white-marble tomb and finally the Taj itself.

It also covers the city's own pain points. Travel writers and locals repeat the same warnings: touts at the station, drivers who steer visitors into commission shops, and copycat sweet shops trading on famous names (Wikivoyage).

Geheimtipps in Agra & das Taj Mahal

Six places that kept coming up in local food writing, heritage blogs and official listings, and that the usual Agra "things to do" lists leave out.

Hessing's "" at the Roman Catholic Cemetery. A small red-sandstone copy of the built by Anne Hessing for her husband, John Hessing, a Dutch mercenary who died in 1803 while commanding for the Marathas (India Heritage). The same walled cemetery holds Armenian merchants' graves, a 1600s Jesuit tomb and the grave of Walter Reinhardt "Samru" (The Winged Sandals). The catch: it is easy to miss. Turn off NH 19 at the Bhagwan Talkies crossing onto Mahatma Gandhi Road and take the narrow lane on the left after about 100 m. Entry is free from sunrise to sunset, and a caretaker can open the gate if it's shut (India Heritage).

. The white Makrana-marble shrine of the Radha Soami faith's founder, under construction since the early 1900s and blending temple, mosque, gurdwara and vihara styles with pietra dura inlay (Incredible India). It shows that Agra's marble-carving tradition is still alive. The catch: entry is free but photography is not allowed (OdishaBytes), and Incredible India lists hours of 10am to 6pm.

Bedai and jalebi at . Agra's signature breakfast is bedai, a fried black-lentil bread with spicy potato curry, eaten with hot jalebi (Outlook Traveller). Deviram has served it since 1965, and locals treat a Sunday plate as a ritual (The Better India). The catch: bedai is served only from 9am to 2pm, and the shop is cheap, busy and mostly standing room (Outlook Traveller).

(the original). Petha, translucent candied ash gourd, is Agra's edible souvenir, and Panchhi is the name everyone recommends, in flavours from plain and angoori to kesar and paan (The Better India). The catch: dozens of lookalike shops copy the name, sometimes adding a tiny word to the sign. Go to the Sadar Bazaar shop that Outlook Traveller lists (Outlook Traveller).

, Sadar Bazaar. The after-dark stop for chicken tikka "franky" rolls and seekh kebabs; locals order the double chicken roll or the double egg double chicken roll (Outlook Traveller). Restaurant India's 2025 street-food round-up also names it for Mughlai paratha (Restaurant India). The catch: it's a busy snack counter, not a sit-down dinner.

in Sadar Bazaar. The lane of chaat stalls where Agra eats in the evening: dahi bhalla, pav bhaji, gol gappe and cheela, for around ₹150 for two (Outlook Traveller). Wikivoyage also points to Sadar for bhallas and pani puri (Wikivoyage). The catch: go hungry and with small notes, and pair it with Panchhi Petha and Mama Franky, which are a short walk away.

Beste Reisezeit für Agra & das Taj Mahal

Go between October and March, and plan around the hour, not just the month. The opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset, and the ticket windows open an hour before sunrise (UP Tourism).

Sunrise. The quietest window, but not empty: one traveler who queued an hour early still found many people ahead (Where Tara Went). Winter mornings can bring fog, so keep a second morning free if the photos matter.

Winter nights. Wikivoyage warns that temperatures can drop to near freezing, so pack layers for dawn queues (Wikivoyage).

Full moon. Night viewing runs on the full-moon night and the two nights either side, except Fridays and during Ramzan, from 8pm to midnight in eight half-hour batches of up to 50 people. Visitors report to Shilpgram 30 minutes early for security (UP Tourism). Book ahead through the Archaeological Survey of India.

Fridays. The Taj is closed, so use Friday for or the riverside tombs (UP Tourism).

Unterwegs in Agra & das Taj Mahal

Use the metro, Uber or Rapido, and e-rickshaws; skip the touts outside Agra Cantt. Wikivoyage suggests walking about 50 m east of the station's main entrance to Mall Road before booking a ride (Wikivoyage).

Agra Metro. The first section links Taj East Gate, Fatehabad Road, (by the West Gate and Taj Ganj), Dr Ambedkar Chowk (for ) and Mankameshwar (for Jama Masjid and ). The official fare chart lists ₹10 to ₹20 (UP Metro via UP Tourism). Wikivoyage quotes a ₹30 fare and 6am to 10pm service, so check at the station (Wikivoyage).

E-rickshaws and autos. Wikivoyage lists about ₹150 to ₹200 for an e-rickshaw and around ₹200 for an auto from Agra Cantt to the Taj, and advises agreeing the price first and never paying upfront (Wikivoyage).

Across the river. , , and sit on the east bank. Hire one auto or e-rickshaw for the whole loop rather than separate rides.

. About 40 km west. Parking is about 1 km from the site, with shuttle buses for ₹10 each way (Wikivoyage).

Unternehmungen in Agra & das Taj Mahal

Read the Mughal monuments in order and the Taj makes more sense: it is the end of a century of Mughal design experiments you can trace across the city.

(1530). Dated by its inscriptions to 1530, the year Humayun took the throne, and now partly ruined, on the Yamuna's east bank near (Wikipedia). Prayers are still held there (Rana Safvi).

. Traditionally called the oldest Mughal garden in India, first laid out by Babur, although historians dispute how much of today's garden is his (Archnet). Look for the charbagh, the four-part garden plan that the Taj later perfects.

. Akbar's red sandstone fort, begun in 1565, with Shah Jahan's white marble halls added later, including the Musamman Burj where he died in 1666 (UP Tourism).

("Baby Taj"). Built by Nur Jahan in white marble with coloured stone inlay (UP Tourism) and completed in 1628, it was one of the first Mughal buildings faced entirely in white marble (Where Tara Went). It is the clearest preview of the Taj.

. The 1635 tomb of Shah Jahan's prime minister, Afzal Khan, and Agra's example of Persian glazed-tile work (Rana Safvi). Entry is free, and the ASI has begun restoration (Outlook Traveller).

Mehtab Bagh. A charbagh garden (UP Tourism) directly across the Yamuna from the Taj (Global Gallivanting). It is the classic sunset view.

and . Akbar's tomb (1604–1613) sits in 119 acres of grounds (UP Tourism). The tomb of his wife, Mariam-uz-Zamani, is about five minutes' drive away, so pair the two (Where Tara Went).

Monument fees (foreign visitors, checked October 2026). Agra Fort ₹650, ₹610, Akbar's Tomb and Itimad-ud-Daulah ₹310 each, and Mehtab Bagh, Ram Bagh and Mariam's Tomb ₹300 each. Indian citizens pay ₹25 to ₹50 (UP Tourism).

Übernachten in Agra & das Taj Mahal

Stay in Taj Ganj or on Fatehabad Road if the sunrise visit is the priority, and near if you care more about food and the train.

Taj Ganj. The old lanes south of the Taj, packed with budget guesthouses with rooftop restaurants, and close enough to walk to the gates before dawn.

Fatehabad Road and Taj East Gate Road. The mid-range and luxury strip, including ITC Mughal and The Oberoi Amarvilas, close to the East Gate, which UP Tourism recommends for smaller crowds (UP Tourism). The Taj East Gate metro station is at the end of this road (UP Metro via UP Tourism).

Sadar Bazaar and the Cantonment. Close to Agra Cantt station and to the best evening snacks: , Mama Franky and Panchhi Petha (Outlook Traveller).

Essen und Trinken in Agra & das Taj Mahal

Agra's best food is cheap, sweet and early: bedai and jalebi for breakfast, petha to take home, and chaat and rolls in at night. Nightlife is thin. Wikivoyage describes virtually none beyond hotel bars and cultural shows, and puts a hotel beer at about ₹70 to ₹100 (Wikivoyage).

. Bedai, a fried lentil bread, with potato curry and jalebi, from 9am to 2pm on MG Road in Pratap Pura (Outlook Traveller).

. A sweet-shop name dating from 1795; order dal batti or bedai, then pick up peda and barfi (The Better India, Restaurant India).

Ram Babu Paratha Bhandar. Agra's oldest-known paratha house, with thick, ghee-soaked parathas and dozens of fillings; one plate feeds two (Outlook Traveller, Delhi Food Walks). Branches are listed in Belanganj and on NH 19 at Sikandra, so confirm the address before you go.

. The mid-range North Indian standby on Fatehabad Road in Taj Ganj, known for mutton seekh kebab, rogan josh and murg boti masala (The Better India, Veena World).

at The Oberoi Amarvilas. The splurge: a candlelit tandoor restaurant with live traditional music, open from 7pm to 10:30pm, smart-casual, and for children over eight only (Oberoi Hotels). Reserve ahead (Veena World).

. A café on Fatehabad Road run by acid-attack survivors, open daily from 11am to 7pm, with a pay-what-you-can menu of baingan bharta, daal and chai (AFAR).

at The Oberoi Amarvilas. A hotel bar whose terrace faces the (Oberoi Hotels). Ask ahead whether non-guests can get a table.

Sadar Bazaar at night. for dahi bhalla and gol gappe, Mama Franky for rolls, and Panchhi Petha for sweets, all within a few minutes' walk (Outlook Traveller).

Tagesausflüge ab Agra & das Taj Mahal

. Akbar's short-lived red sandstone capital, about 40 km west of Agra and a UNESCO site (UP Tourism). The palace area costs ₹610 for foreign visitors; the mosque is free but you go barefoot, so avoid midday heat on the stone (Wikivoyage). Closer in, Guru ka Taal at Sikandra, on NH 19 toward Delhi, is a Sikh gurdwara with a free daily langar (Agra district).

Häufige Fehler

Arriving on a Friday. The Taj is closed every Friday (UP Tourism). Fix: put or the east-bank tombs on Friday.

Not buying the ₹200 mausoleum ticket. The main mausoleum needs an extra ₹200 ticket on top of regular entry (UP Tourism). Fix: buy both online through the ASI site before you queue.

Bringing food, a tripod or a drone. All three are banned inside the Taj (UP Tourism), and you must carry government ID (UP Tourism). Fix: carry only a small bag and leave the rest at the hotel.

Letting the driver plan the shopping. Commission shops inflate prices massively, and fakes are common (Wikivoyage). Fix: shop in Kinari or on your own, and be ready to walk away.

Paying upfront for rides. Wikivoyage's advice is never to pay anyone upfront and to bargain hard (Wikivoyage). Fix: use Uber or Rapido from Mall Road, or agree the fare first.

Doing Agra as a same-day dash from Delhi. The Taj is 204 km from Delhi (UP Tourism), and a day trip puts you at the gates with the crowds. Fix: sleep in Agra and go at opening time.
