Überblick
Barcelona is a big, walkable Mediterranean city that rewards anyone who leaves the old-town core: the travelers who come back unhappy mostly spent their trip on La Rambla, at La Boqueria and on Barceloneta beach, and the ones who come back raving went to the neighborhoods next door.
The city is also actively pushing back on overtourism. Since April 2026 the city's nightly surcharge on top of the Catalan tourist tax rose to €5 per person, tickets are online-only, a neighborhood bus to the park was pulled from map apps, and the viewpoint is fenced at night. None of that should put you off, but it does mean booking ahead and behaving like a guest rather than a crowd.
The other recurring theme is petty theft. Pickpocketing is the single most common complaint in traveler reports, and it is concentrated in a handful of places you can plan around. This guide suits food-focused travelers, first-timers who want the Gaudí highlights without the traps, and repeat visitors looking for the places locals keep naming.
Lieber auslassen – und stattdessen
Most of the "overrated" complaints are about the same three places, and each has a nearby swap that travelers say works better.
Skip: Eating on La Rambla. Instead: Sant Antoni, Poble-sec or Gràcia. Culture Trip and travelers' "Barcelona was underwhelming" threads describe La Rambla as souvenir stalls and overpriced restaurants. Walk ten minutes west to Sant Antoni or Poble-sec for the bars locals actually use.
Skip: Shopping or lingering at La Boqueria. Instead: . La Boqueria is beautiful but vendors have complained for a decade that crowds taking photos block shoppers, and the city restricted large tour groups there in 2015. Sant Antoni has the same iron-market atmosphere with far fewer visitors.
Skip: Barceloneta beach. Instead: or Badalona. A Barcelona-based writer at Spain to Go recommends walking past the Port Olímpic casino to Bogatell and Mar Bella, or taking the train to Badalona's less crowded beaches. Barceloneta station is also one of the metro stations most associated with theft.
Skip: Sunset parties at the . Instead: . The city fenced the bunkers at night from May 2023 after crowds of more than a thousand people a day kept neighbors awake, and they are now daytime-only. For a sunset drink, Montjuïc's La Caseta del Migdia is the local pick.
Skip: Bus 116 to . Instead: buses 24 or V19. The neighborhood minibus was removed from Google and Apple Maps in 2024 because residents couldn't board it. The city reinforced the 24 and V19 instead.
Beste Reisezeit für Barcelona
Go from April to June or from mid-September to early November. The overtourism complaints, the heat and the beach crowds all peak in July and August.
August closures. Check before you plan around a favorite: , for example, is listed as closed for the whole month.
Seasonal hours. Outdoor spots like keep weekend-only hours outside summer.
Big days. The 's Tower of Jesus Christ was blessed on 10 June 2026, Gaudí's centenary year. Reports say its top viewpoint isn't expected to open to visitors before 2027, so don't plan around climbing it. Book Gaudí sites at least a few weeks ahead in any season.
Unterwegs in Barcelona
Use the metro and your feet. The old town, Eixample, Sant Antoni and Poble-sec are all walkable, and the metro fills the gaps.
Tickets. On TMB's fare page (checked October 2026), a T-casual is €13 for 10 journeys and can't be used at the Aeroport T1 and T2 stations on line L9 Sud. For the airport metro, buy the €5.90 airport ticket or a Hola Barcelona travel card (from €12.50), which includes airport return trips.
Pickpockets on the metro. The stations named most often are Plaça Catalunya, Plaça Espanya, , Barceloneta and Sants. Thieves grab bags from seats or the floor just as the doors close, so keep bags on your lap and zipped, and stand away from the doors.
. Take buses 24 or V19, not the 116 neighborhood minibus, and arrive within 30 minutes of your timed ticket or you lose entry.
Übernachten in Barcelona
Stay in Eixample, Gràcia, Sant Antoni or Poble-sec rather than right on La Rambla. You'll be one or two metro stops from the old town, with better-value bars on your doorstep and fewer pickpockets outside.
Gràcia. Local writers describe it as a small town inside the city, with village squares and Plaça de la Vila at its heart. A good fit for longer stays.
Sant Antoni. Around the market, with and nearby, and an easy walk to the old town.
Poble-sec. Under Montjuïc, close to , and .
Budget for the tax. Since 1 April 2026, Idealista reports a total of €9.50 per person per night for tourist apartments and €12 at five-star hotels (Catalan tax plus the €5 city surcharge). Children 16 and under are exempt from the regional part.
Essen und Trinken in Barcelona
Eat where Barcelona eats: in Sant Antoni, Poble-sec, El Born and Barceloneta's back streets, at lunch, and on the city's late schedule. The recurring complaint is tourist-menu food on and near La Rambla. The recurring praise is for old bodegas, counter bars and the Sunday vermouth hour. Eat lunch from about 1:30pm and dinner after 8:30pm. Pickpockets work café terraces, so don't leave your phone on the table.
. The bomba's birthplace in Barceloneta, cheap and lunch-only. Arrive before 11am.
. Standing-room montaditos and tinned seafood in Poble-sec. Weekday lunch is your best chance of a spot.
. A long marble counter in El Raval for upmarket Andalusian-Catalan tapas: lobster croquettes, red tuna tartare, the squid and white-bean stew. Expect about a 30-minute wait without a booking. Closed Sundays.
. A corner bar at the start of Carrer de Montcada in El Born with modern Catalan tapas, squid-ink croquettes and a long natural-wine list. Closed Sundays.
. A remade neighborhood bar in Sant Antoni from the team behind Michelin-starred Slow & Low. Mussels in escabeche, meatballs, cap i pota and a seven-euro bomba. It was No. 3 on Time Out's March 2026 list.
. A milk bar off La Rambla dating to 1870 and the birthplace of Cacaolat chocolate milk. Order the suizo (thick hot chocolate with whipped cream) or the crema cremada. The owner told Ara in March 2025 that she plans to retire in about two years, so check it's still open.
. A tiled cava bar near the Picasso Museum with Cantabrian anchovies and cheap house cava. It's busy enough to spill into the street, so go at opening.
and . Barcelona's oldest bar (absinthe) and its oldest cocktail bar (1933, daiquiris), both in El Raval.
Vermouth. On a Sunday, have a house vermouth on ' terrace in Sant Antoni before lunch.
Häufige Fehler
The same handful of mistakes come up in almost every traveler report, and each has a simple fix.
Phone on the café table, bag on the chair back. These are the easiest thefts. Keep both on you, zipped, especially on terraces in the Gothic Quarter, El Born and El Raval.
Falling for the distraction. Watch for "bird poo" on your jacket, rosemary sprigs, petitions, someone returning something you "dropped", and fake plain-clothes police asking to see your wallet. Real police won't go through your wallet. Walk away.
Turning up at without a ticket. Tickets are online-only, timed, and you have 30 minutes from your slot. Once you leave, you can't re-enter.
Booking the at the last minute. Official prices (checked October 2026) are €26 for the basic ticket with the app audio guide and €36 with tower access. Slots sell out in busy months.
Eating at 7pm on La Rambla. Early dinners mean tourist menus. Move one neighborhood over and eat later.
Expecting the €1 pintxo. is still cheap, but inflation has ended the €1 era. Count on roughly €2 a piece and keep your toothpicks.
Using a T-casual for the airport. It isn't valid at the L9 Sud airport stations. Buy the airport ticket or a Hola Barcelona card.

FAQ zu Barcelona
Is Barcelona really that bad for pickpockets?
It is the most common complaint in traveler reports, but it's concentrated and avoidable. The hotspots are La Rambla, the Gothic Quarter, El Born near the Picasso Museum, El Raval and around the , plus Plaça Catalunya, Plaça Espanya, Sagrada Família, Barceloneta and Sants metro stations.
