Überblick
Lagos is Nigeria's commercial and entertainment capital, a lagoon city of more than 20 million people where residents call themselves islanders (Lagos Island, , , Lekki) or mainlanders (Surulere, Yaba, Ikeja). It suits travelers who want Afrobeats, serious food, contemporary art and a packed party calendar, and who can live with traffic and noise.
Detty December is when the city peaks. OkayAfrica cites a MO Africa Company report of 1.2 million visitors in December 2024, and CNN reports that Lagos State credited the 2024 season with more than $71.6 million in tourism, hospitality and entertainment spending. The catch is cost and congestion: flights, party tables, shortlets and even grilled fish climb in price, and CNN found ordinary Lagosians paying the seasonal markup too.
This guide is built around that season (where to base yourself, how to get out of the airport safely, what things really cost) but the hidden gems work year-round. If you're splitting the holidays between two cities, our Accra guide covers the Ghana side of Detty December.

Skip: picking a ride from whoever calls out in the arrivals hall. Instead: a pre-arranged pickup or an app ride.
The UK Foreign Office warns that criminals posing as airport greeters are a problem and says to make sure a greeter or driver identifies themselves before you leave the airport. Lonely Planet's Lagos writer recommends LagosRide, Uber or Bolt, or a pickup from a reputable taxi company, over picking among the approved operators who call out to arriving passengers. If you do take an airport taxi from FAAN's dispatch desk, fares are agreed with the driver, so settle the price before your bags go in.
Skip: Balogun Market on a December Saturday. Instead: .
Lonely Planet calls Balogun "a symphony of organized chaos" that's best for people who don't mind crowds; for calmer shopping it points to the Lekki Arts and Crafts Market, a maze of stalls selling art and handmade accessories where you can browse at your own pace.
Skip: the canopy walk at peak time. Instead: , or LCC first thing.
The 401-metre canopy walkway is on the mainstream top-10 lists, and Lonely Planet's advice is to arrive early or off-peak. Lufasi, about a 10-minute drive further along the Lekki–Epe Expressway, has forest trails and lakes, and its staff have said they don't want it overcrowded.
Skip: expecting to walk into the Oba's palace. Instead: the .
Iga Idunganran, the palace of the Oba of Lagos, was fenced off from view with entry restricted when Lonely Planet's Lagos writer last reported on it in 2023. The John Randle Centre at Onikan covers Yoruba history, royal regalia and the Eyo masquerade in galleries you can actually walk into.
Skip: VIP standing for the biggest headliners if you're on a budget. Instead: smaller December shows or the Shrine.
BusinessDay reported Flytime Fest VIP standing at ₦250,000 for Davido and ₦300,000 for Asake in December 2025, and CNN found party tables jumping from ₦350,000 to ₦500,000. The same BusinessDay list had Fireboy DML at ₦35,000, Juma Jux at ₦30,000 and Johnny Drille at ₦20,000, and regular nights at the have long cost far less than any of them.
Skip: swimming off the open beaches. Instead: a beach-club pool.
The UK Foreign Office warns that swimming off Nigeria's coast is sometimes dangerous because of rip tides and undertows. 's Island Breeze club has its own swimming pool, so you get the beach scene without the surf.
Beste Reisezeit für Lagos
Go in the dry season, roughly November to March; come mid-December to New Year for Detty December, or late March and the second half of the year for the art calendar.
The rains run from about April or May into July or August, with more in September; Lonely Planet puts the rainy season at May to August and a local guide at April to July plus September, so pack for showers near either edge. The average temperature is around 32°C, sometimes reaching 35°C, so plan outdoor sights early in the day.
December is peak everything. Nairametrics reported shortlet operators lifting nightly rates by up to 50% between 22 December and 3 January, and CNN found economy fares on Nigerian airlines roughly doubling to ₦350,500, with increases starting as early as August. Detty December Fest runs 18–30 December 2026, with Wizkid opening the festival on 18 December.
Outside December, the second half of the year is festival season: from August the arts calendar fills with mostly free events such as Lagos Fringe, LagosPhoto and the Lagos Books and Art Festival, and mid-October brings Felabration, a week of concerts at the in memory of Fela Kuti. Lagos Gallery Weekend ran 28–30 March in 2025.
Unterwegs in Lagos
Use ride-hailing apps or a car with a driver, and plan each day around one part of the city, because Lagos traffic decides everything.
Apps and drivers. Uber, Bolt, inDrive and the state's own LagosRide all operate; LagosRide cars carry a dashboard camera and a panic button. The UK Foreign Office says taxis, including app taxis, can pose a kidnap risk and recommends hotel cars with drivers where possible. In December, OkayAfrica warns that ride-hailing gets expensive and sometimes nearly impossible to find, so for big nights consider hiring a car and driver and always have a plan for getting home.
From the airport. Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) is on the mainland side, near Ikeja. Pickups were disrupted in August 2026 amid a dispute over FAAN's new airport car-hire system; FAAN says it hasn't banned e-hailing and cleared Bolt to resume at its airports on 27 August 2026. Check the current rules before you fly, arrange a pickup in advance where you can, and agree any airport-taxi fare before you set off.
Buses and rail. BRT buses run on dedicated lanes from 6am to 8pm and need the Cowry app, and the Blue Line rail normally stops around 9:30pm and needs a Cowry card. They're good for seeing the city, less so for late nights out.
Okada and keke. Motorcycle taxis (okada) are banned on several routes, including major highways; three-wheeled kekes are fine for short neighborhood hops, with the fare agreed before you start.
Boats. Boats leave the Five Cowries Terminal at Falomo for , about 20 minutes away, and Lonely Planet rates the roughly 90-minute lagoon trip to Badagry above the two-hour drive.
Unternehmungen in Lagos
Beyond the gems, plan around art, a history walk, one show and one beach day.
Gallery-hop in and VI. Omenka Gallery occupies modernist painter Ben Enwonwu's former home, kó Art Space shows Nigerian modernists alongside contemporary artists in an art deco interior, and Tiwani Contemporary on is closed on Sundays and Mondays; all three were free to enter in Roadbook's July 2025 guide.
Walk colonial Lagos Island. Lonely Planet's Lagos writer maps a walk through the Onikan, Broad Street and Marina district: Tafawa Balewa Square, the Holy Cross and Christ Church cathedrals, City Hall and , a 19th-century prison turned into a garden, gallery, bar, museum and food court.
See a show at . The Victoria Island arts centre stages Nigerian plays and musicals most weekends, with bigger productions over public holidays.
Take the boat to . It's about 20 minutes from the Five Cowries Terminal; surfers learn here, campers stay over, and the resident community keeps the sand free of trash.
Say yes to an owambe. If you're invited to a Lagos party, go: Lonely Planet's writers call it the best of Nigerian culture, with matching aso-ebi outfits, food and dancing, and a custom outfit can be sewn in 24 to 48 hours.
Übernachten in Lagos
For a first Detty December, base yourself in or ; pick for shortlets and nightlife, and Ikeja only if you want the airport or the Shrine close by.
Victoria Island (VI). The business and nightlife hub, with hotels, restaurants and many of December's biggest stages: in 2025, Flytime Fest played the Eko Convention Centre, Fireboy DML played Eko Hotel and Iconiq Fest closed at the Landmark Event Centre. The trade-off is serious congestion.
Ikoyi. Lagos's most prestigious residential district and home to its largest expat community, with shops, supermarkets and pharmacies along Awolowo Road, just east of Lagos Island. Locals describe it as quiet and upscale. Utilities are better than in most areas, but power and water can still be inconsistent. The 2025 Detty December Fest was held at Ilubirin, which Prime Business Africa placed in Ikoyi.
Lekki Phase 1. East of VI, with cafés, malls, a growing bar scene and a deep pool of shortlet apartments. It's handy for beach parties and the Lekki–Epe sights, but crossing back to the island in December traffic eats time.
Ikeja. On the mainland near the airport, with more budget-friendly options; the is here too.
What it costs. Nairametrics found shortlets in Ikoyi, VI and Ikeja GRA at ₦120,000–₦200,000 a night before December, rising to ₦180,000–₦300,000 once December starts (September 2025). Some operators demand 14-night minimums and full payment upfront, and one visitor was charged extra for generator fuel during an outage, so ask how power is billed. OkayAfrica suggests having someone check a rental in person or by video before you pay.
Essen und Trinken in Lagos
Eat at the bukas (canteen-style local restaurants) and suya stands for the most Lagos meals, and save 's design-led dining rooms for one splurge. Island prices run higher: in December 2025, CNN found grilled catfish at ₦15,000–₦20,000 in Surulere against up to ₦30,000 on Lagos Island.
, and . The three food gems above cover the essentials: 's late-night suya, Surulere amala and Niger Delta soups in .
. A Lagos Island buka since the late 1980s, near the old Ghana High Commission in Obalende, serving jollof, ewa aganyin (creamy beans with a seafood chilli sauce) and waakye for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For takeaway, bring your own container or buy one at the entrance.
. A Yoruba-themed restaurant that serves only pounded yam, with egusi or efo riro and a choice of meats, and staff dressed in iro and buba. A July 2025 menu listed the Aso Ebi combo (pounded yam, soup and two pieces of goat meat) at ₦8,000. The Lekki Phase 1 branch on Dr. Muiz Banire Street is small and fills up fast.
. The one splurge: modern pan-African cooking inside the Alára concept store on Akin Olugbade Street, Victoria Island. Atlas Obscura singles out the abula (amala with ewedu, gbegiri and stew) and the Palmwine Crush cocktail, though menus change with the seasons; Nairametrics put the average spend at ₦30,000–₦49,000 a head in February 2025.
. The Victoria Island arts centre's restaurant does Nigerian comfort food such as ewa agoyin with Agege bread and asaro (yam pottage); time dinner with one of its weekend stage shows.
. Nigeria's first craft brewery pours Lagos Lager, Harmattan Haze and Black Gold Stout at its Victoria Island taproom, with live music on Friday nights and Mexican food on Tuesdays, and brewery tours can be booked by email through its website.
. The Kuti family's Afrobeat hall in Agidingbi, Ikeja, is one of the best-value nights out in Lagos: Femi Kuti's Sunday Jump, Thursday rehearsals and Felabration every October. Special shows charge more, so check before you go.
. The easiest beach-club scene from VI: cabanas, sports courts and the Island Breeze club with a pool by day, then concerts, comedy and silent discos after dark. Private beaches in Lagos charge ₦1,000–₦3,000 to get in, plus about ₦500 to park (Lonely Planet, June 2026).
Tagesausflüge ab Lagos
The best day trips are Badagry for the history of the Atlantic slave trade, the Lekki–Epe corridor for art and forest, and the Epe mangroves by canoe.
Badagry. On the western edge of Lagos State, Badagry has the state's largest cluster of listed heritage sites. A typical day covers the , the Brazilian Barracoon, the Vlekete Slave Market and the Mobee Slave Relics Museum, finishing with a 2.5km walk across Gberefu Island to the Point of No Return. It's about two hours by road from Ikeja, or about 90 minutes by boat from the Five Cowries Terminal or the Tarzan jetty.
The Lekki–Epe corridor. Combine the at km 52 with at km 41, starting early to stay ahead of expressway traffic.
Epe mangroves. About 70km from central Lagos, Epe is the place to drift through mangrove channels in a canoe, stop at Iba Oloja to see garri being made, and finish at the Epe Fish Market, the largest in Lagos State.
Häufige Fehler
The most common mistakes are underestimating traffic, assuming apps and cards will always work, and booking December late.
Planning Lagos like a walkable city. The UK Foreign Office notes that traffic in Lagos can be slow and to allow extra time, and OkayAfrica calls December jams inevitable. Fix: give each day one zone (Lagos Island and , the Lekki–Epe corridor, or the mainland) and don't zigzag.
Relying on ride-hailing on peak nights. Apps get expensive and sometimes vanish in December. Fix: for concerts and late parties, book a car and driver, or agree a ride home before you go out.
Booking a December shortlet late or sight unseen. Operators switch to December rates as soon as you mention the month, and Nairametrics found December quotes already circulating in mid-September. Fix: book early, ask about minimum stays and generator fuel, and get a video walk-through before paying in full.
Carrying only cards. Card and POS payments are everywhere, but mobile networks fail and transfers don't always go through. Fix: carry small naira notes (₦50 to ₦500), and keep your card in sight when you pay, since the UK Foreign Office says card fraud is common.
Forgetting the paperwork. Visa on arrival ended in May 2025. Fix: apply for an e-Visa online before you fly (approvals are expected within 48 hours) and complete the online landing card before boarding.
Skipping malaria precautions. Malaria is one of the more common health risks in Lagos. Fix: talk to your doctor before the trip and pack repellent; Lonely Planet notes even returning Nigerians usually take precautions.
Praktische Tipps für Lagos
A few local habits make Lagos easier: learn some pidgin, pay with your right hand and expect noise.
Learn a little pidgin. English is the official language, but pidgin is understood almost everywhere: "How you dey?" (how are you?), "abeg" (please) and "e don do" (that's enough) go a long way.
Use your right hand. Older Lagosians consider handing over money with the left hand disrespectful.
Expect noise. Honking, megaphone sermons and bus conductors are part of the soundtrack; if you're a light sleeper, ask whether your hotel is next to a church or mosque.
Eat swallow with your hands. Swallows such as amala and pounded yam are traditionally eaten by hand, so rinse your hands first; some restaurants bring a bowl of water to the table for this.
