Überblick
Montego Bay ("MoBay") is Jamaica's tourism capital and the arrival point for most visitors, thanks to Sangster International Airport on its edge. It suits travelers who want a beach base with real Jamaican food and nightlife within a short taxi ride, rather than a week sealed inside an all-inclusive.
The city took a direct hit from Hurricane Melissa on 28 October 2025. By February 2026 the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce said most businesses were operating again, but some hotels, restaurants and tours reopened late or are still rebuilding. That's why this guide only recommends places with recent evidence that they are open, and flags the ones that aren't.
The most common traveler worries are the same three: is it safe to leave the resort, how to get from the airport without being overcharged, and where to swim if you aren't staying on a private beach. Each is answered below.
Heads-up for October 2026. The Hip Strip is still patchy. Usain Bolt's Tracks & Records burned after the storm, and Marina Palms is moving to a new waterfront site. Check any business you've seen on an older list before you go.

Skip: on a cruise-ship day. Instead: . Travel writers call Doctor's Cave overcrowded with tourists when ships are in. It's a paid private bathing club, while Harmony Beach Park, a short taxi ride south, is free and has lifeguards. If you do go to Doctor's Cave, aim for a day with no ship in port.
Skip: Greenwood Great House for now. Instead: Rose Hall Great House or the . The Observer reported that Greenwood lost its roof in Hurricane Melissa, and the Jamaica Tourist Board's reopening list still shows it as closed. Rose Hall and the Cultural Centre are both listed as open.
Skip: hunting for Tracks & Records. Instead: . Usain Bolt's Hip Strip restaurant was badly damaged by fire in November 2025 and was still closed in May 2026. The Pelican, also on the strip, serves the Jamaican comfort food people went to Tracks for.
Skip: shopping on the Hip Strip at first-quoted prices. Instead: haggle gently, or shop at the Old Fort Craft Market. The most common complaint about the strip is price: many stalls sell the same T-shirts and souvenirs, and one reviewer found strip prices higher than the hotel gift shop. The craft market has 156 vendors trading, though a renovation runs from late September 2026 for about eight months.
Beste Reisezeit für Montego Bay
Go from December to April for the driest, sunniest weather, or mid-April to May for lower prices and fewer crowds. December to April is peak season, with the highest room rates, and late December and March are the busiest weeks.
Hurricane season runs June to November, peaking in August and September, and October is usually the wettest month. Rain usually comes as short afternoon or evening downpours, but Melissa showed what a direct hit does. If you travel in these months, buy insurance that covers storms.
Watch the cruise schedule. The beaches and the Hip Strip near the port fill up on ship days, so plan Doctor's Cave and the Hip Strip for days with no ship in, and head to or the hills on days when ships are docked.
After Melissa: the US State Department's January 2026 advisory still describes western Jamaica, including Montego Bay, as being in varying stages of recovery. It asks travelers to confirm that services are running before they arrive. That matters most for day trips into the hills and Westmoreland.
Unterwegs in Montego Bay
From the airport, use the authorised taxi desk or a pre-booked transfer, not the drivers who approach you in arrivals. JUTA and JCAL share a desk just outside customs at Sangster International. Guides say fixed rates per destination are posted there; agree the fare (and the currency) before you get in. Unlicensed drivers offer cheaper rides, and both the government and the tourist board advise against them.
Licensed taxis have red PPV plates. Avoid white-plated cars offering rides. The UK Foreign Office advises using Jamaica Tourist Board-approved taxis, whose drivers carry photo ID and display a blue JTB sticker on the windscreen. Most taxis aren't metered, so settle the price first and photograph the plate. Don't count on Uber or Lyft in Montego Bay.
Route taxis and minibuses are cheap but crowded, often only a few hundred Jamaican dollars a ride. Most visitor guides suggest saving them for daytime, short hops once you know the city. The UK Foreign Office advises against buses at night.
Between towns, take Knutsford Express. It runs air-conditioned coaches from a depot at Sangster airport and from Montego Bay to Negril, Ocho Rios, Kingston and beyond. Book online. If there's no direct bus, you book each leg separately, and a seat on the connecting bus isn't held until you buy it.
Don't drive at night. Getting-around guides advise against night driving, and the UK Foreign Office advises against walking or taking buses after dark. If you rent a car, photograph any damage before you drive away.
Übernachten in Montego Bay
For walkable beaches and food, stay on or near the Hip Strip (Gloucester Avenue/Jimmy Cliff Boulevard). You can walk to , , Margaritaville and Pier 1, and is a short taxi ride. The S Hotel on Doctor's Cave beach was among the first back to full operation after the storm.
For quiet resort beaches, stay in Rose Hall or Ironshore, east of the airport. This is where the big all-inclusives and Half Moon are, close to . Several properties reopened in stages through 2026 and some are still closed (Sandals Montego Bay was listed as closed until December 2026), so check your hotel's own status page rather than an older booking listing.
Avoid booking blind in inland neighbourhoods. The UK Foreign Office flags Flankers, Barrett Town, Glendevon, Rose Heights and Mount Salem for gang-related crime. Its advice is to be cautious there rather than to avoid the city.
Essen und Trinken in Montego Bay
Montego Bay eats best at its jerk pits, its Hip Strip diners and a couple of seafood restaurants on the water. Most local staples reopened within weeks of Hurricane Melissa, but check any restaurant on an older list, because several closed or moved.
. Hip Strip diner since 1964, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Order ackee and saltfish in the morning, oxtail or curry goat later.
. The jerk pit on the North Coast Highway at Coral Gardens, east of the airport. Order jerk pork and chicken grilled over pimento wood, with festival and roast breadfruit. Get there before the tour buses at noon.
. A jerk counter on the Hip Strip, opposite Walter Fletcher Beach. It's spiced to local tastes; the jerk pork is the thing to order. 2026 reviewers praise the meat but warn about being quoted prices in US dollars and running out of pork late in the day, so ask the price in Jamaican dollars before you order.
Snappaz Seafood Grill & Sports Bar. A big, casual seafood spot on Kent Avenue in Whitehouse, near the airport. Reviewers mention steamed snapper and curry shrimp. The owner told the Observer it was back up and running days after the storm.
. A rope-pulled raft takes you out to a houseboat in the Bogue Lagoon. Order lobster from the pen under the floor, in season July to March.
. The Hip Strip's long-running waterfront fine-dining room, next to Margaritaville. Dinner only. Book a sunset table for the bouillabaisse or sea bass.
. The Mediterranean-leaning seafood restaurant at Eclipse at Half Moon, back since the resort reopened in April 2026. Order the two-tier seafood tower or the squid-ink pasta with clams, and call +1 876-953-2211 first to check whether non-guests can book.
Sugar Mill at Half Moon. Rose Hall's candlelit splurge beside an old water mill. Order Solomon's Brochette, flambéed in aged rum at your table. Half Moon's site gives its reopening date as 16 October 2026 (another of its pages says 14 October). It opens Friday to Monday only, and reservations are required.
For drinks and a night out: hosts "Pier Pressure" on Fridays (open until 4am) and "Star Struck" on Wednesdays (until 2am). Margaritaville stays open until about 4am on Thursdays and Saturdays. Lounge 2727, the Observer's 2022 Best Watering Hole outside Kingston, is a cocktail lounge on the Hip Strip with sunset views. is open around the clock for gaming, with the Lava Bar and a Sunday brunch buffet.
Häufige Fehler
Taking the first driver who approaches at arrivals. Fix: go to the JUTA/JCAL authorised desk outside customs, or pre-book through your hotel, and agree the fare and currency before you set off.
Assuming everything reopened after Hurricane Melissa. Fix: check the Jamaica Tourist Board's reopenings page and the business's own site or social pages for anything on an older list. Greenwood Great House, Tracks & Records, Marina Palms and many watersports operators were still closed in 2026.
Paying in US dollars at US-dollar prices. Fix: carry Jamaican dollars for jerk stands, taxis and markets, and ask for the price in JMD. Visitors at the and on the Hip Strip report being quoted inflated US-dollar prices.
Forgetting cash for attractions whose card machines went down in the storm. Fix: is cash only on site; carry small notes for roadside stands, parking and tips.
Driving or taking buses at night. Fix: book a taxi for evenings out. Both the US and UK governments advise against night buses and inter-city driving after dark.
Trying to cram Negril, Ocho Rios and the Blue Mountains into a short trip. Fix: pick one day trip. Excursion pick-ups can turn a 90-minute drive into three hours.
