Panorama general
Cairo is Egypt's capital, and Giza, across the Nile on its western edge, holds the pyramids and the new Grand Egyptian Museum. Most visitors build a trip around those two, then add a few days for Islamic and Coptic Cairo, the palaces of the 19th and 20th centuries and the food.
The complaints travelers repeat are about friction, not the sights: unofficial "guides" and camel handlers at Giza, taxis without fixed fares, shop detours that pay drivers a commission, heavy traffic between central Cairo and Giza, and a museum that now sells tickets only online. Since 2025 the pyramids have a new entrance and an electric-bus system, and since December 2025 the has had no ticket office on site. Many older guides still describe how things worked before.
The quieter side of Cairo is easy to reach. A prince's palace, a 9th-century flood gauge, a Belgian baron's Hindu-style mansion, a church carved into a cliff and two quieter pyramids came up again and again in local media, official sites and traveler write-ups, and none of them is on the usual top-ten lists.
Qué evitar y qué hacer en su lugar
Skip: a camel or horse ride from whoever approaches you at Giza. Instead: the plateau's electric buses, and a ride only with a licensed handler at an agreed price. The most-reported pyramid scam is a low quoted price that rises once you're on the animal and away from the crowds, sometimes with the handler refusing to let the camel kneel until you pay. Since April 2025, private cars and tour buses have been banned from the plateau, and more than 45 electric buses run about every five minutes from the new gate on the Cairo–Fayoum road. Animal handlers have been moved to designated zones.
Skip: Darb 1718 in Fustat. Instead: Rawda Island's Nilometer and . The contemporary arts center was demolished on 6 January 2024 to widen a road, according to ARTnews, but it still appears in "offbeat Cairo" lists published as late as 2025.
Skip: the old in Tahrir for Tutankhamun. Instead: the 's Tutankhamun Galleries. The full Tutankhamun collection, including the gold mask, is now at the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza. The royal mummies are at a third museum, the in Fustat, which needs its own ticket.
Skip: the "government papyrus institute" or perfume-shop stop. Instead: tell your driver or guide your plan before you set off. These detours are commission-driven, and some of the "papyrus" is banana leaf. If a driver says a site is "closed today" and offers somewhere else, check the official hours yourself.
Skip: tickets offered by anyone outside the gate. Instead: the official windows, ticket machines or website. Forged and marked-up tickets are sold around the major sites. The Grand Egyptian Museum sells only through visit-gem.com.
Mejor época para visitar El Cairo y Guiza
Go between October and April, when the heat is manageable. December to February is the busiest season at the , so book slots early then.
Time of day. At the Grand , the earliest slots are the least crowded and the Tutankhamun Galleries are the busiest rooms. When it opened, the museum stayed open late on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with the galleries open until 9pm, according to Khaleej Times. Check the current hours when you book. At Dahshur, which has almost no shade, start at 8am.
Days of the week. Weekdays are calmer than weekends at the museum. Avoid the on Friday and Sunday, when services fill it. The is usually on Saturday, Monday and Wednesday evenings.
Ramadan. Opening hours shrink. For example, closes at 3pm instead of 5pm, and Dahshur may close mid-afternoon, so check each site's hours before you go.
Cómo moverse por El Cairo y Guiza
Use Uber or Careem for most trips: both work in Cairo and quote a fixed price, which avoids the "broken meter" taxi problem. Build in buffer time: traffic between central Cairo and Giza is heavy, and it's the trip travelers most often underestimate.
Street taxis. If you take one, agree the fare before you get in and carry small notes, because drivers often say they have no change.
Metro. The metro avoids traffic for city-center trips. For , the official site names Sayeda Zeinab as the nearest station.
Giza plateau. Private cars and tour buses can no longer drive onto the plateau. You enter at the new gate and visitor center on the Cairo–Fayoum road, then ride electric buses between the monuments. The is on the edge of the plateau, but it's a separate ticket and a separate entrance.
Dahshur and Saqqara. There's no public transport, so hire a car and driver for the day. In December 2025 one traveler reported paying about 500–750 EGP for a day-long taxi, depending on how well you negotiate. Keep the same driver for the return trip, because ride-hail cars are hard to find out there. Local guides suggest taking the Saqqara road rather than the Fayoum road route that GPS apps sometimes choose.
. Book a round trip with a driver or a tour. Getting a ride back out of Manshiyat Naser on short notice is difficult.
Dónde alojarse en El Cairo y Guiza
Choose your base according to what you'll do most, because crossing Cairo in traffic takes time.
Zamalek. A leafy Nile island with many of the city's sit-down restaurants and bars, including , and . It's central for Rawda Island and downtown, and a good all-round base for a first visit.
Downtown (Bab al-Louq and Talaat Harb). The cheapest base and the most atmospheric, with , , , and a few streets apart and the old walkable. Expect noise.
Giza, near the pyramids. This is the best choice if your priority is an early start at the and on the plateau, and for dinner at or Andrea. It's a long ride from Islamic Cairo and Heliopolis, so it suits a short trip focused on Giza.
Garden City and the Corniche. Big Nile-front hotels here put you between downtown and Rawda Island. From some upper floors you can see the pyramids on a clear day.
Dónde comer y beber en El Cairo y Guiza
Cairo eats cheaply and well. Koshary (rice, pasta and lentils with spiced tomato sauce and fried onions), ful (stewed fava beans) and taameya (Egyptian falafel made with fava beans) cost little at long-running downtown spots, while Zamalek and Giza have the sit-down and splurge options. Downtown's Bab al-Louq has the densest cluster: , , and are all within a few streets of each other.
. The best-known koshary hall in Cairo, at 40 Champollion Street downtown. Locals say to order it with extra crispy onions, garlic sauce and tomato sauce. It's fast, cheap and busy, and the menu is very short.
Felfela. A long-running downtown institution just off Talaat Harb, for ful, taameya and other Egyptian staples at low prices.
Fasahet Somaya. Home cooking for about two hours each evening, cash only, with daily dishes such as mulukhiyah and rokak. See Hidden gems.
. Egyptian street food done in a casual, colorful room, ranked No. 32 on MENA's 50 Best Restaurants 2026. Order the taameya topped with salad and tahini, and the koshari with dukkah. There's also a branch at the .
. Lantern-lit Egyptian dining behind a discreet entrance off 26th of July Street. It's known for molokhia, stuffed pigeon and duck. Reviewers note that prices have risen over the years.
Café Riche. A downtown café on Talaat Harb, open since 1908, where Naguib Mahfouz was a regular. Go for an old-school Egyptian lunch and the history.
. The splurge. It sits within the Giza pyramid complex, faces the pyramids directly, and was named the best restaurant in the Middle East and North Africa for 2026. The modern rural-Egyptian menu includes mu'ammar rice with smoked beef and a koshari salad, and there's a vegetarian menu. Weekend breakfasts are popular, so book.
Andrea El Mariouteya. A courtyard grill on New Giza Road that has belonged to the same family for more than 60 years. It has pyramid views and oregano-scented chargrilled chicken, at an average of about US$5 a head according to The 50 Discovery.
Drinks and nights out. El Horreya and , a garden bar in an alley off Kasr El Nil Street, keep downtown's old baladi-bar culture going. is Zamalek's long-running English-style pub. Cairo Jazz Club in Agouza books live bands and DJs most nights. Ticketed nights are 23+ with ID checked at the door, so reserve and dress smart-casual. For something alcohol-free, the Tanoura troupe's whirling-dance show at Wekalet al-Ghouri, a restored Mamluk-era building in Islamic Cairo, runs on Saturday, Monday and Wednesday evenings. Sources give start times from 7:30pm to 8pm, so check locally and buy tickets at the venue.
Errores comunes
Cramming the and the pyramids into one rushed day. A thorough museum visit takes four to five hours. Split the two across two half-days, or do the museum in the morning and only the plateau's highlights in the afternoon.
Turning up at the Grand without a booking. On-site ticket sales ended in December 2025. Book a timed slot on visit-gem.com, and save the confirmation as a screenshot or PDF because phone signal at the entrance can be unreliable.
Accepting "free" things. A scarf handed to you, a stranger offering to take your photo, or someone who jumps into your shot will all expect payment afterwards. Say a firm "no, thank you" and keep walking.
Agreeing a price for "one" when it's per person, or for "a short ride". Before any camel, horse or felucca ride, agree the total price, the duration, the stops and whether it's per person or per boat.
Not carrying small notes. Taxi drivers and attendants often say they have no change, and small tips are expected for things like the attendant at a pyramid tunnel. Break large notes at your hotel or a supermarket.
Taking a one-way ride to Dahshur or the . Getting back is the hard part, so keep your driver for the round trip.

Itinerarios por El Cairo y Guiza
One day
Book the earliest slot and spend the morning there, starting with the Tutankhamun Galleries before they fill up. Have lunch at 's museum branch. In the afternoon, enter the pyramids through the new gate on the Cairo–Fayoum road and use the electric buses to reach the Great Pyramid, the Sphinx and the panoramic viewpoint. Finish with dinner facing the pyramids at (book ahead) or, for much less money, chargrilled chicken at Andrea El Mariouteya.
Two days
Day 1 as above. On Day 2, start on Rawda Island: the Nilometer when it opens at 9am, then before the ticket window closes at 4pm. Cross to downtown for koshary at Abou Tarek, then visit the old in Tahrir for its non-Tutankhamun collection. At about 5pm, queue for 's two-hour dinner service (not on Saturdays). End the night with a beer at or .
Three days
Days 1 and 2 as above. On Day 3, hire a driver at 8am for Dahshur: the first, then the Bent Pyramid. Add Saqqara and Memphis on the way back if you have the energy. Spend the evening at the Tanoura show (Saturday, Monday or Wednesday) or at . If you'd rather stay in the city, swap Dahshur for in Heliopolis in the morning and the in the afternoon (not on a Friday or Sunday).
Preguntas frecuentes sobre El Cairo y Guiza
Do I need to book Grand Egyptian Museum tickets in advance?
Yes. Since December 2025 the museum sells tickets only online, at visit-gem.com, for a timed entry slot, and daily numbers are capped. Peak-season slots can sell out well ahead. Published prices differ between sources, so check the official site, which also says whether Tutankhamun access is included.
Does the Giza pyramids ticket let me go inside the Great Pyramid?
No. The general plateau ticket (700 EGP for foreign adults on the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities' November 2024 price list) covers the grounds only. Going inside the Great Pyramid and the other pyramids and tombs needs separate tickets. Sources disagree on the current interior prices, so check at the visitor center.
How do I avoid scams at the pyramids?
Buy tickets only from the official machines, windows or website, turn down unofficial "guides" and anyone handing you things, and agree the full price before any animal ride. The 2025 changes, which ban private vehicles from the plateau and move handlers into designated zones, have reduced the hassle, but haven't ended it.
Are Tutankhamun's treasures and the royal mummies in the same museum?
No. The Tutankhamun collection is at the in Giza, and the royal mummies are at the in Fustat, across the city. Each needs its own ticket and at least half a day.
Is Dahshur worth it if I've already seen Giza?
Travelers who go say yes, because it's quiet and the ticket is cheap. A 200 EGP ticket covers both the Red and Bent Pyramids, interiors included, and there are no touts. Plan for 1 to 1.5 hours on site and about an hour's drive each way from central Cairo.
