Delhi to Agra: Train, Car or Day Tour? When Each One Wins

Take the train for the quickest, most predictable trip: two 6 a.m. departures reach Agra Cantt before 8 a.m., and the Gatimaan Express takes 100 minutes. Hire a car if three or more of you share the fare, you want Fatehpur Sikri too, or you need to be at the gates at dawn. A day tour mainly saves planning, so book one that rules out shopping stops.
The trains that make a day trip work
Four trains with reserved chair-car seats run to Agra in the morning and back in the evening, so you can spend anywhere from just under eight hours to more than 13 in the city.
Morning trains from Delhi. The Vande Bharat Express (22470) leaves Hazrat Nizamuddin at 6 a.m. and reaches Agra Cantt at 7:40, every day except Monday. The Shatabdi (12002) leaves New Delhi station at 6 a.m. daily and arrives at 7:50, with breakfast included in the fare. The Taj Express (12280) leaves Nizamuddin at 7:08 and gets in at 9:25. The Gatimaan Express (12050) leaves Nizamuddin at 8:10 and arrives at 9:50, every day except Friday. All times were checked on timetable sites in October 2026.
Evening trains back. The Gatimaan (12049) leaves Agra Cantt at 5:35 p.m. and reaches Nizamuddin at 7:30. The Taj Express (12279) leaves at 6:20 p.m. and gets in at 9:05. The Vande Bharat (22469) leaves at 9 p.m. and arrives at 11:10, again not on Mondays. The Shatabdi (12001) leaves at 9:25 p.m. and reaches New Delhi at 11:50.
Which pair to pick. The Gatimaan both ways gives you about seven and three-quarter hours in Agra. Agra Cantt is a 5.8 km, 15-minute ride from the Taj, so a 6 a.m. train puts you at the gates around 8 a.m. That's after the quiet first hour but ahead of the late-morning crush described in our Taj Mahal tickets and timing article. Add the 9:25 p.m. Shatabdi back and there's time for Agra Fort and the riverside tombs too.
Book early. Reservations open 60 days ahead. The last-minute Tatkal quota has required Aadhaar authentication since July 2025, which Seat61 says effectively rules out foreign visitors. A Foreign Tourist quota exists for short-notice bookings, but it is often just two seats, so book as soon as your dates are fixed.
Ignore the station touts. At New Delhi station, Seat61 warns of touts, some wearing badges, who claim the ticket office has moved, your train is cancelled or you need a boarding pass, then steer you to a travel agency or a car and driver. E-tickets need no boarding pass, so check the departure boards yourself. For real help, the International Tourist Bureau is one flight up above platform 1 on the Paharganj side, open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. The UK government's India advice gives the same warning about people at stations offering tickets and tours. For fair fares from Agra Cantt and how to get past the touts there, see the getting-around section of our guide.
When a car beats the train
A car wins when you want to leave before the first train, when a group is splitting one fare, or when you want to add Fatehpur Sikri.
What it costs. Uber's intercity page lists Delhi to Agra at ₹2,248 one way for its basic car, ₹2,542 for a sedan and ₹3,163 for a six-seat XL, for a trip of about 223 km and four hours (checked October 2026). Round trips can be requested in the app. Split four ways, the basic car works out at about ₹560 each per direction.
Ask what the fare includes. In a June 2025 r/delhi thread, a visitor's Uber driver demanded ₹1,500 in "toll tax and extra tax" on top of the fare from Agra. The top-voted reply put the genuine extras at roughly ₹500 to ₹600, tolls plus a small state tax, and others said to ask for the FASTag toll record and take the rest up with Uber. For reference, the Yamuna Expressway Authority's toll table lists ₹120, ₹155 and ₹140 for a car at its Jewar, Mathura and Agra plazas, or ₹415 in all. With a private driver, get tolls, parking and the driver's allowance written into the quote.
Expect a long day. Uber's own estimate is four hours each way. One traveler on an Australian Frequent Flyer forum thread left Delhi at 6 a.m., reached Agra at 10:30 and faced a five-hour drive back, calling the day "do-able but makes for a long day."
What a car adds, and the detour it brings. Fatehpur Sikri, about 40 km west of Agra, is awkward by public transport, with irregular trains and roughly hourly buses, and Seat61 suggests a car and driver for two or three travelers. The catch is the shopping stop: Wikivoyage says Agra's shops typically pay around 50% commission to whoever brings you in. Tell the driver at the start that you won't visit any shops. The day trips section of our guide covers Fatehpur Sikri itself.
Day tours: what you pay for, and the catch
A tour takes the logistics off your hands, but it doesn't shorten the day, and the usual catch is time spent in commission shops.
The sunrise version. A pre-dawn start by road is the only way to see the Taj at dawn without sleeping in Agra, and sunrise tours are built around it. One Delhi operator's sunrise itinerary collects you at 2:30 or 3 a.m., reaches the Taj around 6 a.m. and has you back in Delhi by about 3:30 p.m., priced from $60 for car, driver and guide to $140 with entry tickets and breakfast. That means about three hours on the road, mostly in the dark, and the UK government's advice for India is blunt: "Avoid travelling at night and in fog as accidents are common due to low visibility."
Insist on no shops. Wikivoyage reports opening markups of 1,000% to 10,000% in Agra's tourist shops. Some operators sell tours that rule shopping out; one listing promises the guide or driver "is not going to ask you to stop at any shopping enterprise or at any factory show room." Get that promise in writing. Also check whether entry is included, because listings vary and the foreigner ticket is ₹1,100, plus ₹200 for the mausoleum.
Check the weekday and the month first
Fridays, Mondays and foggy winter mornings each knock out an option, so check your date before you book anything.
Fridays. The Taj is closed every Friday and the Gatimaan doesn't run, so a Friday tour can only show you the Taj from across the river at Mehtab Bagh.
Mondays. The Vande Bharat pair doesn't run, so the 6 a.m. Shatabdi is your early train.
Late December to January. Fog hits both rails and roads. Wikivoyage says trains run slower in late December and early January, and the morning Shatabdi may reach Agra well after 10 a.m. On 6 January 2026, fog delayed 94 trains to and from Delhi, and Northern Railway said train drivers slow down because fog hides the signals. On the road, the Yamuna Expressway's limit for cars dropped from 100 to 75 km/h between 15 December 2025 and 15 February 2026. In those weeks the pre-dawn drive is the riskiest choice of all.
If dawn at the Taj is the point of the trip, the better answer is an afternoon train and a night in Agra. Our Agra & Taj Mahal travel guide explains why, and its where-to-stay section lists the areas closest to the East Gate.

Quick answers
Which Delhi station do the Agra trains leave from?
The Gatimaan, the Vande Bharat and the Taj Express all leave from Hazrat Nizamuddin, while the Shatabdi leaves from New Delhi station. Check the station printed on your ticket before you book an early-morning ride to it.
Can I book Indian train tickets with a foreign card?
Not always on the official site: Wikivoyage says cards issued by foreign banks are often declined on the Indian Railways website. Seat61 recommends 12Go, which accepts overseas cards without an IRCTC account. If you do register with IRCTC, Seat61 notes a small fee for overseas mobile numbers and that the verification text doesn't always arrive.
Is the bus from Delhi to Agra worth it?
Only if cost matters more than time. Wikivoyage says most buses use local roads to avoid tolls and take four to five hours, arriving at Idgah Bus Stand, about 8 km from the Taj, or ISBT Transport Nagar, about 12 km away. On a day trip, that leaves little time for Agra itself.
Can I go on to Jaipur instead of returning to Delhi?
Yes. Seat61 lists the Marudhar Express leaving Agra Fort station around 6:45 a.m. and reaching Jaipur at 11:50, which works after a night in Agra with the Taj done the day before. With a car and driver, you can stop at Fatehpur Sikri, about 40 km west of Agra, on the way.
When to go, where to stay, what to skip: the rest is in the Agra & the Taj Mahal, India travel guide.
