Aperçu

Accra is Ghana's coastal capital, and in December it becomes West Africa's biggest homecoming party. Ghana counted more than 125,000 international arrivals in December 2024, its busiest month in three years, many of them from the African diaspora (Africanews).

That makes December the most fun and the most frustrating time to come. Residents and visitors complain about rising prices, overcrowding and heavy traffic, and Ghana's tourism officials now brand the season "December in GH" rather than "Detty December" (Graphic Showbiz).

This guide is for travelers who want the season without paying peak prices for everything: the art houses, boxing gyms, night food and day trips that traveler reports and local press keep recommending, and the beach and nightlife traps to swap out.

Pépites cachées

The best December finds in Accra are the ones that don't sell tables: two independent art houses, Jamestown's working boxing gyms, the Osu night food market, and two escapes, Shai Hills and , where the Christmas crowds thin out.

, Labadi. Painter Ablade Glover's gallery fills three floors on the Accra–Tema Beach Road with contemporary Ghanaian painting alongside kente, Asafo appliqué flags, masks, carved furniture and fantasy coffins, all for sale (Artessere). Apollo, local culture site Imullar, Spark Magazine and the Kempinski's own city guide all point art lovers here. The catch: published opening hours disagree between listings, so call ahead before you cross town.

, Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City. Collector Amadu Baba's gallery shows contemporary and historic African art and design in a room built from northern Ghanaian red and yellow clay, with curved amphitheatre steps instead of white walls (Icon). Imullar describes a Pan-African collection, and the hotel's own guide calls it the place for ethnic art and antiques (Kempinski). The catch: it shares the hotel grounds with the better-known , so see both in one stop.

Jamestown's boxing gyms (). The fishing quarter of Bukom produced Azumah Nelson and a run of world champions, and gyms such as Attoh Quarshie, Will Power and Bronx still train in the open air (Kuwait Times / AFP). Professional boxing in Ghana was suspended in March 2025 after a boxer's death, but the gyms kept training (MyJoyOnline), and the ban was lifted on 6 November 2025 (Ghanaian Times). The catch: go with a guide. Easytrack Ghana runs a 3-hour gym walk from 3pm on weekdays, listed at $79 per person, and it is not offered on weekends or public holidays (Easytrack Ghana).

Osu Night Market. Just off , vendors set up each evening with kebabs, waakye wrapped in leaves, Ga kenkey with pepper and fried fish, kelewele, fried yam and suya (Graphic). Accra architect Alice Asafu-Adjaye describes clubbers ending up here for kenkey and fish in the small hours (CrowdDNA). The catch: it's informal and crowded; bargaining is expected and you should keep your phone out of reach.

Brazil House, Jamestown. The yellow two-storey house was the first home of the Tabom, formerly enslaved Afro-Brazilians who settled in Jamestown in 1836 (University of Rochester). The family still lives downstairs and the upper floor has served as an arts space tied to the Chale Wote street art festival (NYU Africa Dispatch). The catch: there are no reliable published hours, so the easiest way in is a guided Jamestown arts walk that stops there (Easytrack Ghana).

. About an hour's drive from Accra, this coastal savannah reserve has olive baboons, antelopes and three bat caves, Adwuku, Sayu and Hieweyu, plus inselbergs to climb for views back toward the city (Graphic). The catch: fees are charged by the hour and foreign visitors pay more than Ghanaians, so arrive early, carry small notes and confirm the rate at the gate (Shai Hills fees guide).

Ada Foah and the Volta estuary. About 120 km east of Accra, the Volta River meets the Atlantic among islands and lagoons. Sea turtles nest on the beaches from August to February, so December falls in the season, and the Wildlife Division runs night turtle walks (Wikivoyage). The catch: it's 1½ to 2½ hours each way by tro-tro from Tudu Station or Tema Roundabout, so stay the night rather than rushing a day trip.

Excursion

À éviter, et quoi faire à la place

Swap the crowded city beach and the bottle-service lounges for a canoe-access beach and the night market.

Skip: on a December weekend. Instead: on a weekday. Labadi is the best-known beach but it has shrunk badly from erosion at the main entrance, pickpocketing is rampant at weekends, and noise builds from Friday to Sunday (Ghana-net). Bojo, west of the city at Bortianor, is reached by a short canoe crossing included in the entry fee, and travelers find it calmer and cleaner. Weekends there bring crowds and louder music too (Time Out Accra).

Skip: Laboma Beach. Instead: Bojo, or for an overnight. Older December lists still send people to Laboma (Spark Magazine), but its beachfront clubs and eateries, including Pink Flamingo, were demolished on 13 September 2026 to clear the Kpeshie Lagoon flood buffer (Graphic).

Skip: a full night of table-only lounges. Instead: Osu Night Market and bars. A Ghanaian showbiz commentator warned in January 2026 that places which never charged entry suddenly did in December, and items were overpriced (Graphic Showbiz). Eat at the night market and keep the paid-entry club for one night.

Skip: swimming at Kokrobite at high tide. Instead: go in at low tide only, or swim at Bojo. Kokrobite has drumming and the region's best beach atmosphere, but at high tide the sea there is genuinely dangerous and there are no lifeguards (Ghana-net).

Quand y aller

Come between November and March for dry weather; come in December only if the parties and homecoming are the point, and book early.

December. The festive season brings concerts and festivals; in 2025 the line-ups included Busta Rhymes at Rhythm and Brunch and Giggs at Afro Paradise on 31 December (Africanews). Expect the year's highest prices and worst traffic.

Harmattan. Dry, dusty north-easterly winds from the Sahel usually reach the coast in December. Ghana's Meteorological Agency advised people to stay hydrated and wear masks when it began in 2025, and told drivers to slow down in the haze (Rainbow Radio). Bring eye drops if dust bothers you.

Turtle season. Sea turtles nest along the Ada coast from August to February, which makes December a good month for the estuary (Wikivoyage).

Outside December. October to April is the drier, less humid window with fewer mosquitoes (Coeur de Xocolat).

Se déplacer

Use Uber or Bolt, but carry cash and leave far more time than the app suggests.

Ride-hailing. Download Uber and Bolt before you land. Travelers report that many drivers want cash and cancel when they see a card payment, so carry cedis or ask to stop at an ATM (Coeur de Xocolat).

Traffic. A 15-minute trip can take an hour and a half at rush hour (Coeur de Xocolat). Group sights by area: Jamestown and the Nkrumah park together; Osu, Labadi and the La galleries together; East Legon and Legon together.

Day trips. Tro-tros to Ada leave from Tudu Station or Tema Roundabout (Wikivoyage); a private Ada day tour with Easytrack is listed at $129 to $249 per person depending on group size (Easytrack Ghana). Aburi is about an hour by Uber or Bolt, roughly GHS 150 each way as of April 2026, or by tro-tro from Madina (Chris Toone).

Où loger

Stay in or near Osu for walkable food and nightlife, or in Labone or Cantonments if you want to sleep.

Osu. It's central, 20 to 30 minutes from the airport, and stays lively late. On Friday and Saturday nights you won't sleep before 2am right on the strip; two or three blocks back is far quieter (OwnKey area guide).

Labone and Cantonments. Quieter residential neighborhoods close to Osu with similar travel times to the centre (OwnKey area guide).

Overnight at the beach. At , staying the night beats a day trip (Ghana-net). At there are chalets and estuary beach camps (Wikivoyage).

Erreurs courantes

The most common December mistakes are booking late, relying on a card, and planning a tight schedule in Accra traffic.

Paying by card only. Many ride-hailing drivers and stalls want cash, and ATMs aren't always working (Coeur de Xocolat). Fix: keep a stack of small cedi notes.

Scheduling back-to-back plans. Traffic can turn a short hop into 90 minutes. Fix: plan one area per half-day.

Trusting old beach lists. Laboma's beachfront venues were demolished in September 2026 (Graphic). Fix: check that a December venue still exists before you book.

Swimming without checking the tide. There are no lifeguards at most beaches, and none reliably (Ghana-net). Fix: swim at low tide in calm water, or not at all.

Walking into Jamestown's gyms or Brazil House cold. Neither publishes visiting hours. Fix: book a guided Jamestown walk.

Ignoring the harmattan. The dust can make the air unhealthy for sensitive people (Rainbow Radio). Fix: pack a mask and stay hydrated.

Exemples d'itinéraires

One day

Start at Jamestown in the afternoon on a guided walk that takes in the lighthouse, Brazil House and a boxing gym, then cross to Labadi for the before closing time. End the night at the Osu Night Market.

Two days

Day one as above. On day two, leave early for Shai Hills to see the baboons and caves while it's cool, return for a late lunch, and spend the evening in Osu, staying a few blocks off .

Three days

Add a night in : take a boat out on the Volta estuary in the afternoon and join a night turtle walk if one is running. On the way back, stop at on a weekday for a swim in calmer water.

FAQ

Is December a good time to visit Accra?

Yes, if the parties and the homecoming are the point. It's the busiest month, with over 125,000 international arrivals in December 2024 (Africanews), so expect peak prices, heavy traffic and harmattan dust. Book early and plan one area per half-day.

Do I need cash in Accra?

Yes. Many Uber and Bolt drivers prefer cash and some cancel card rides, and smaller places don't take cards (Coeur de Xocolat). Shai Hills and Aburi both charge gate fees, and Aburi's is cash only.

Is Labadi Beach worth it?

Only if you want the scene. Erosion has shrunk it at the main entrance, and pickpocketing is common on weekends (Ghana-net). , reached by canoe, is the calmer swap.

Can visitors watch boxing training in Jamestown?

Yes, with a guide. The gyms kept training through the 2025 professional boxing suspension, which was lifted in November 2025, and weekday guided gym tours run from Jamestown (Easytrack Ghana).

How far is Ada Foah from Accra?

About 120 km, or 1½ to 2½ hours by tro-tro from Tudu Station or Tema Roundabout (Wikivoyage). Stay overnight to see the estuary at an easy pace.
