Aperçu

Cape Town suits travelers who want mountain walks, cold-water swims and good food in one trip, and who are willing to plan around safety rather than ignore it. The city is spread out between Table Mountain, the Atlantic seaboard and the warmer False Bay coast, so where you stay and how you get around matter more here than in most cities.

The most common worry travelers raise is safety. Local guides point out that most crime happens in the city's poorer eastern suburbs, away from the areas visitors use, and that , Camps Bay and Hout Bay are generally walkable by day. The practical rules are consistent across sources: Uber instead of walking after dark, hike in groups, and keep phones and cameras out of sight (Wander Cape Town).

This guide focuses on what visitors often skip: the False Bay villages and their tidal pools, a low-key cave hike in Silvermine, and a farmers' market that moved to a new home in December 2025. It also covers the traps people report, from the suspended airport bus to GPS routes that take drivers through dangerous areas.

Pépites cachées

Seven places that local media, Cape Town guides and travel writers keep recommending, but that rarely appear on the standard "things to do" lists. Five of them are on the False Bay side, which is warmer for swimming and reachable by train as far as Fish Hoek.

. A working fishing harbour where boats come in with the catch, seals hang around the pier and the village behind it is full of bookshops, galleries and cafés. Time Out's Cape Town editors name the harbour and its three tidal pools as the reason to come, and Wander Cape Town calls the train ride there "cheap and easy" if you travel before 6pm (5pm in winter). The catch: go on a weekday morning, because weekends get busy and parking along Main Road is tight.

. The calm pool behind the row of brightly painted Victorian bathing huts, between Muizenberg and Kalk Bay. Local guides recommend it for families because the rock walls keep the water calm, and it sits a short walk from St James station. Dalebrook and Kalk Bay Harbour are a short walk further along the coast, so one train ticket covers all three.

. A larger pool just south of St James, with an outdoor shower and changing room, and boulders to sunbathe on. Cape Town Magazine calls it "probably one of the most loved tidal pools". The catch: it loses the afternoon sun behind the mountain, so locals swim in the morning.

. A shallow pool next to Glencairn station, between Fish Hoek and Simon's Town, rebuilt to let more water in and good for children and rock-pooling. The catch: Glencairn is on the Fish Hoek to Simon's Town section of the railway, which only runs as a shuttle (see Getting around), so most people drive.

. A sheltered rock pool with a small slide, braai (barbecue) spots and changing rooms about 5 km south of Simon's Town on the road to Cape Point. Several local guides call it a hidden gem because it is quieter and good for snorkelling. The catch: you need a car, the pool is a short walk from the second turn-off (the one for the boat launches), and capetownetc warns about baboons, so keep food packed away.

. A shallow cave high on the Constantiaberg, reached from Silvermine Gate 1 on Ou Kaapse Weg in about two hours round trip on a mostly wide jeep track, with a steep, rocky last section. It reopened on 1 September 2025 after a fire closed Silvermine. The catch: a SANParks conservation fee is charged at the gate (sources disagree on the amount, so check SANParks before you go), and weekend mornings in summer are crowded.

. Cape Town's best-known farmers' market moved on 6 December 2025 to a purpose-built timber barn at the corner of Granger Bay Boulevard and Dock Road at the V&A Waterfront, with 100+ traders. According to the market's own site, it opens Saturday 08:00–14:30, Sunday 08:30–14:30 and Wednesday evenings 16:00–21:30. The catch: the Wednesday night market closes in June and July, and older guides still give the previous location and hours.

À éviter, et quoi faire à la place

Skip: Queuing for the Table Mountain cableway at the ticket office. Instead: buy online and take an early car. Standard tickets bought online are valid for seven days, so you can go on the first clear, calm morning. The cableway closes in bad weather, and on 4 October 2026 the official site showed a lower-station wait of about 1 hour 30 minutes (Table Mountain Aerial Cableway).

Skip: Treating as a quick photo stop. Instead: visit the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum on Wale Street and walk the area with a local guide. In November 2024 residents protested about 40-seater tour buses blocking their streets, tourists photographing homes and peering through windows, and noise during the midday call to prayer (Daily Maverick). Ask before you photograph people or their houses.

Skip: A sunset hike on your own. Instead: a daylight hike in a group, like Elephant's Eye on a weekend morning. In September 2025 a hiker was attacked and robbed on the Pipe Track near Camps Bay in the early afternoon. SANParks advises groups of four or more and leaving valuables at home (Cape Argus).

Skip: Letting GPS pick the "fastest" route from the airport. Instead: stay on the N2 and main roads. In 2023 a US tourist was shot after his navigation app routed him through Nyanga, and Google then agreed to stop sending drivers that way (Daily Maverick). Check your route before you drive.

Skip: Walking between bars or restaurants after dark. Instead: Uber door to door. Local safety advice is to avoid walking alone at night, even in tourist areas, and to stick to busy, well-lit streets if you do walk (Wander Cape Town).

Quand y aller

March–April and November are the sweet spot: warm, mostly dry, and less crowded than December and January. December is the busiest month, with school holidays, peak prices and long queues at the big sights (Stingy Nomads).

Summer (December–February). The hottest and windiest months. January is the windiest, which matters for the cableway and for beaches on the Atlantic side.

Autumn (March–May). March is still warm and sunny with little rain. By May it gets cold, wet and dark, but prices drop.

Winter (June–August). The rainy, cheapest season. Whale season starts around June, and the Wednesday night market at Oranjezicht City Farm closes in June and July.

Spring (September–November). Warming up with fewer crowds. In October 2026, SANParks is inspecting ladders and chains on 6–9 October on Lion's Head, India Venster, Kloof Nek Corner, the Contour Path waterfall section and Llandudno/Judas Peak, with delays of 30–45 minutes per site (Atlantic Sun).

Se déplacer

Use Uber or taxis for most trips in the city, the train for the False Bay villages by day, and a car for Silvermine and .

From the airport. The MyCiTi airport bus has been suspended since 1 December 2022, and the operator's site still says it is "temporarily suspended" (MyCiTi). Use Uber, a metered taxi or a rental car. If you drive, stay on the N2 and main roads rather than following a GPS shortcut.

Train to the False Bay coast. The Southern Line runs from Cape Town through Muizenberg, St James and Kalk Bay to Fish Hoek. Extra trains added in March 2024 cut the wait between trains from about 45 to 20 minutes (GroundUp). Local advice is to travel in daylight and choose a carriage with other passengers in it.

Fish Hoek to Simon's Town. This stretch, which includes Glencairn, only runs as a shuttle. In April 2026 the rail agency said it would add daytime trains but would also have to suspend service for track repairs on dates not yet announced (False Bay Echo). Check the day before, or drive.

Driving. A car makes Silvermine (Elephant's Eye), Miller's Point and Cape Point easy. Park in garages or busy, well-lit spots, and leave nothing visible in the car.

Où loger

Most first-time visitors stay on the Atlantic seaboard or by the waterfront, which keeps them near restaurants and Uber pickups. Choose based on what you plan to do, not on price alone.

. Walkable by day, with a long seafront promenade, plenty of restaurants and short Uber rides to the city and the V&A Waterfront. Local safety guides list it among the areas that are generally fine to walk (Wander Cape Town).

Camps Bay. A beach suburb on the Atlantic side. It's quieter at night, and travel writers note it scores below the global average for violent crime (Matador Network).

Kalk Bay or St James. A good base if the tidal pools and False Bay are your focus. You can walk to the harbour, the pools and the train, but the city is a long trip away.

Wherever you stay, ask your host which streets are fine to walk after dark. The answer can change from one block to the next.

Erreurs courantes

The same few mistakes come up again and again: assuming public transport covers the airport, walking at night, and hiking alone.

Planning on an airport bus. The MyCiTi airport service is suspended. Book an Uber or a transfer before you land.

Trusting the fastest GPS route. Navigation apps have sent drivers through crime hotspots near the airport. Stay on the N2 and other main roads.

Hiking alone or late. Robberies on Table Mountain National Park trails are well documented. Go in a group, start early, tell someone your route, and save the park's emergency number, 086 110 6417 (Cape Argus).

Leaving valuables in sight. Phones in hand, cameras on show and bags left on the beach or in parked cars are the usual targets. Keep them out of sight.

Swimming at the wrong time of day. Dalebrook loses the sun in the afternoon, and summer weekends at the tidal pools get crowded. Go in the morning.

Using old market details. moved in December 2025, so check its website for the current hours.

Exemples d'itinéraires

One day

Take the Southern Line in the morning to St James. Swim at , then walk the coastal path south to and on to for fish and chips and the bookshops. Catch a train back well before dark.

Two days

Day one as above. On day two, if it's a weekend, have breakfast at at Granger Bay, then ride the Table Mountain cableway on a ticket bought online. Take an Uber for any evening plans.

Three days

Add a day by car. Hike to from Silvermine Gate 1 in the morning with a group, then drive down the False Bay coast to and on to for a late-afternoon swim, keeping food away from the baboons.

FAQ

Is Cape Town safe for tourists?

Most visitors have no problems, and most crime happens in areas away from the tourist districts. The risks visitors actually face are theft, car break-ins and robberies on hiking trails. Use Uber after dark, hike in groups and keep valuables out of sight.

Is there a bus from Cape Town airport to the city?

No. The MyCiTi airport bus has been suspended since December 2022 and was still listed as suspended in October 2026. Use Uber, a taxi or a rental car, and if you drive, stay on the N2.

Can I take the train to Kalk Bay and the tidal pools?

Yes. The Southern Line runs from Cape Town to Fish Hoek through Muizenberg, St James and Kalk Bay, and service improved in 2024. Travel in daylight and choose a carriage with other passengers. Past Fish Hoek to Simon's Town there is only a shuttle.

Is the Elephant's Eye hike open after the Silvermine fire?

Yes. Silvermine Gate 1, which includes the Elephant's Eye trail and Silvermine Dam, reopened on 1 September 2025 after the April 2025 fire. Stick to marked trails, and check SANParks for the current conservation fee.

Where is the Oranjezicht City Farm Market now?

Since 6 December 2025 it has been in a new timber barn at the corner of Granger Bay Boulevard and Dock Road at the V&A Waterfront, linked by a bridge to Victoria Wharf. It opens Saturday and Sunday mornings, plus Wednesday evenings except in June and July.
