Aperçu
Athens is a big, gritty, working capital with the ancient world poking through it, and it rewards travelers who give it three or four days instead of one night between the airport and a ferry. In traveler threads, the common regret isn't that Athens was overrated; it's that people rushed it.
The Acropolis is the reason most people come, and since April 2024 it runs on timed hourly entry, so the visit is now about picking the right slot. Around it, the most rewarding parts of the city are the ones most visitors never reach: the ancient cemetery at Kerameikos, the neighbourhood tavernas of Petralona and Kolonos, the hill-top views from Strefi, and the bars of Kypseli.
This guide suits first-timers who want the big sights without the worst of the crowds, food-focused travelers, and anyone passing through Athens on the way to the islands who wants to get the ferry logistics right.
À éviter, et quoi faire à la place
Skip: a midday Acropolis slot in July or August. Instead: the 8:00 slot or the last slots of the day. Crowds build after 10:00 and peak from around 11:00 to 14:00, the summit has no shade, and during heatwaves the Culture Ministry closes the site from about midday to 17:00, sometimes announced the same day. Spend midday in the Acropolis Museum, which needs its own ticket.
Skip: the menu touts around Monastiraki Square. Instead: Kostas souvlaki or lunch at . The official city guide specifically tells visitors to walk past the touts. A few minutes away, family-run Kostas makes a pork souvlaki pita that has drawn queues for decades.
Skip: making Lycabettus your only viewpoint. Instead: . From Lycabettus you can't see Lycabettus. Strefi, a short walk from Exarchia Square, frames both it and the Parthenon, and it's used mostly by locals.
Skip: Rafina for most island trips. Instead: Piraeus, unless you're going to Andros, Tinos or Mykonos. Piraeus has the widest choice of routes and a direct metro. Rafina is closest to the airport but serves only a few islands year-round and has no metro.
Skip: sleeping in Plaka in summer. Instead: Koukaki or Pangrati. Plaka is beautiful to walk through but loud at night in high season. Koukaki is about a 15-minute walk to the Acropolis with cheaper tavernas; Pangrati is quieter and residential.
Meilleure période pour visiter Athènes
Go from April to early June or from late September through October for walkable weather and full Acropolis hours. June is cooler and less crowded than July and August.
Summer (June–August). Heatwaves can push past 40°C. In July 2025 the Acropolis closed from 13:00 to 17:00 on consecutive days, and 2026 guides warn the same can happen at short notice. Ferry schedules are at their fullest, and Rafina adds summer routes to Paros, Naxos, Ios and Santorini.
Shoulder season (April–May, September–October). The Acropolis keeps summer hours (8:00–20:00) until 31 October. Half Note's jazz season starts in October.
Winter (November–March). The Acropolis switches to 8:00–17:00 and Kerameikos closes mid-afternoon. It's the quietest time for sites and the best time for jazz, bars and long taverna lunches, but island ferry options shrink.
Se déplacer à Athènes
Walk the centre and use the metro for everything else. The three metro lines meet at Syntagma, Monastiraki and Omonia, and a standard €1.20 ticket covers 90 minutes on buses, trams and metro.
From the airport. The airport metro (line 3) costs €9 and the X95 bus to Syntagma costs €5.50; the bus runs around the clock.
To the ferries. For Piraeus, take metro line 1 (green) or line 3 (blue) to Piraeus station, which is opposite the main gates (E5–E8). Piraeus has 10 gates spread along the waterfront; a free shuttle links them, but Gate E1 (Rhodes, Kos and the Dodecanese) is more than 2 km from the metro, so allow time or take a taxi. For Rafina, take the KTEL coach from Pedion tou Areos (about an hour) or a taxi from the airport (under 30 minutes). Lavrio, for Kea and Kythnos, is easiest by taxi from the airport.
Pickpockets. The airport metro and the green line are the routes travelers most often name; keep phones and wallets in front pockets.
Où loger à Athènes
For a first trip, stay in Koukaki; for a longer, quieter stay, try Pangrati.
Koukaki. Just south of the Acropolis under Filopappou Hill, with Syngrou-Fix and Akropoli metro stations on line 2. It's about a 15-minute walk to the Parthenon and 5–10 minutes to the Acropolis Museum, with tavernas under €20 a head. Many older buildings have no lift, so check before booking.
Plaka and Monastiraki. The most central and the most atmospheric, but also the noisiest at night in summer and the main pickpocket zone.
Pangrati. Residential, green and full of local tavernas and cafés around Varnava Square, with the Panathenaic Stadium on its edge. It's a walk or bus ride from the main sites.
Où manger et boire à Athènes
Athens is one of Europe's best-value food cities. Eat at neighbourhood tavernas in Petralona, Kolonos, Pangrati and Kypseli, and use the area around the Central Market for cheap lunches.
Kostas. A souvlaki counter at 5 Pentelis, near Agia Irini Square, run by the founder's grandson and serving pork souvlaki in pita with tomato, onion, parsley and paprika. Expect a queue and plan to eat standing. It's a daytime place, not a dinner stop.
. The no-menu basement taverna opposite the fish market: chickpea soup, fried sardines and retsina. Lunch only, cash only.
. A Levantine street-food counter at 23 Karori in the historic centre, known for lahmajoun, peinirli and the daily soup, with baklava and kunefe across the street.
. A modern Psyrri restaurant at 2 Melanthiou, praised for tuna carpaccio, grilled John Dory and hot wild greens, and now open for breakfast too.
in Kolonos and in Petralona are the two traditional tavernas food writers mention most; book Ton Filon well ahead.
. A low-key home-cooking taverna on Agios Georgios Square in Kypseli, known for stewed vegetables and meatballs in tomato sauce, and popular late at night with theatre actors.
For bakeries, Kora at the foot of Lycabettus sells sourdough, cheese and sausage pastries and salted cookies.
Drinks. (30 Praxitelous) is an all-day bar in a neoclassical townhouse that was No. 3 on The World's 50 Best Bars in 2020 and is No. 30 on Europe's 50 Best Bars 2026; order the Aegean Negroni. (6 Kleitiou) stocks more than 150 rums and opens at 19:00 most days. For older Athens, go to in Kypseli for a dry martini, and to Half Note in Mets for jazz from October to May.
Erreurs courantes
Turning up at the Acropolis without a timed ticket. Entry is by hourly slot with a 15-minute grace period either side, and morning slots sell out days or weeks ahead in summer. Book on hhticket.gr, and note that in 2026 the central ticket office was closed for works, with entry from the South Slope.
Treating Athens as a one-night stopover. Travelers on Reddit repeatedly say three to four days is the minimum and that their regret was leaving too soon.
Leaving your phone on the taverna table. A common trick is someone approaching your table with a paper or photo asking for money while a hand takes the phone. Keep phones in a pocket and bags off chair backs.
Cutting the ferry too fine. Arrive at Piraeus at least an hour before departure, check your gate on your ticket, and remember that Gate E1 is more than 2 km from the metro.
Expecting walk-in tables at the best tavernas. is still hard to book more than a year after opening, and Manari in Monastiraki also asks you to book.
Going to Kerameikos or the Acropolis at midday in summer. Both have little shade. Go at opening or in the last two hours.
Planning a summer jazz night. Half Note's season runs October to May.
Itinéraires à Athènes

Add a Mets and Pangrati day: the First Cemetery in the morning, a look at the Panathenaic Stadium from Ardittos Hill, and a cheap lunch near Anapafseos Street. How many days do you need in Athens?
Three to four days covers the Acropolis, the main museums and a few neighbourhoods without rushing. Travelers who allowed one night between the airport and a ferry are the ones most likely to say they regret it.
Do I need to book Acropolis tickets in advance?
Yes. Entry is by timed hourly slot, the standard ticket is €30, and summer morning slots sell out early. Book on the official hhticket.gr site, and arrive about 30 minutes before your slot for security.
What is the best time of day to visit the Acropolis?
At 8:00 opening or in the last couple of hours before closing. Crowds peak from around 11:00 to 14:00, and in heatwaves the site can close from midday to 17:00.
Which port do ferries to the Greek islands leave from?
Most leave from Piraeus, which serves the Cyclades, Crete, the Dodecanese and the Saronic islands and has a direct metro. Rafina, near the airport, is mainly for Andros, Tinos and Mykonos; Lavrio is for Kea and Kythnos.
Is Athens safe for tourists?
Generally yes, but pickpocketing is common on the airport metro, the green line, and around Monastiraki and the Acropolis. After dark, travelers advise avoiding the backstreets of Omonia and Exarchia and isolated Filopappou Hill.
