Aperçu

Las Vegas is two cities. The Strip is a 4-mile run of mega-resorts built to keep you inside, and the rest of the valley is where locals eat, drink and hike. Most traveler complaints, about resort fees, $25 cocktails and taxi lines, come from staying entirely in the first city.

This guide is for people who want both: a night or two on the Strip, then the off-Strip places that locals and repeat visitors keep naming, like the Chinatown restaurants on Spring Mountain Road, the 1950s bars of Fremont East and an Ice Age fossil park 25 minutes north of downtown.

It suits food-focused trips, first-timers who want to avoid the obvious traps, and anyone combining the city with Red Rock Canyon or Valley of Fire. If you want a beach-style pool trip in summer, plan around heat that regularly tops 100°F.

Pépites cachées à Las Vegas

Ten places cleared the bar: each is recommended by at least three independent sources, confirmed open in October 2026, and missing from the mainstream "things to do in Las Vegas" lists.

. A state park in North Las Vegas where the 1960s "Big Dig" excavation turned up Columbian mammoth, camel and dire wolf fossils. The 0.3-mile Megafauna Trail has life-size sculptures of Ice Age animals, and the 1.2-mile Big Dig Trail runs past the original trenches. The catch: it's open Wednesday to Sunday only, 8am to 4:30pm, and entry is $3 (children 12 and under free). The park has posted trail closures from storm damage, so check Nevada State Parks before you go.

. A 180-acre site on the spring that founded Las Vegas, with botanical gardens, about 3.5 miles of trails, the Nevada State Museum, a short train ride and a recreated 1905 town. Recent listings give Thursday to Monday, 9am to 4pm (last entry 3pm), and $18.95 for non-resident adults (checked October 2026). It's cashless, and trails and train rides close when heat warnings reach 105°F. The seasonal butterfly habitat runs to November 23, 2026.

. The Smithsonian-affiliated National Atomic Testing Museum on East Flamingo Road, about 10 minutes from the Strip, covers the Nevada Test Site, with a simulated blast theater and a "World of Fallout" exhibit running through 2026. It's open daily 9am to 5pm (box office closes 4:15pm) and is cashless; reviews give adult admission as $29. Reviewers say to budget longer than you expect.

. A nonprofit, volunteer-run arcade across from the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign, with pinball machines spanning seven decades. There's no entry fee: older machines cost 25 cents a play and 1990s models 50 cents, and surplus money goes to the Salvation Army. Hours are 10am to 9pm Sunday to Thursday and to 10pm Friday and Saturday. Its own site stresses there are no ticket-redemption games.

. A free 2,900-acre riparian park on the east side of the valley where beavers, coyotes and more than 200 bird species have been recorded. Trails are open dawn to dusk, and the Nature Center is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 3pm. The catch: pond maintenance is closing some Nature Preserve trails through February 2027, and dogs aren't allowed.

The . The blocks around South Main Street and Casino Center Boulevard south of downtown, with the Arts Factory, independent galleries, vintage shops and many of the city's best off-Strip restaurants. The district's First Friday street party has long been its biggest night, but the organizer's site currently says production is paused, so check ffflv.org before planning around it. The galleries and bars are worth an evening either way.

. A tiny Chinatown dumpling counter at 4266 Spring Mountain Road whose xiao long bao (soup dumplings) come up in nearly every local food list. Order the xiao long bao and the pan-fried sheng jian bao, plus the fat noodles while the dumplings cool. The catch: there are no reservations and you may be asked to order before you're seated.

. An 18-seat counter in the middle of an off-Strip locals casino, open 24 hours, famous for its pan roast: a creamy tomato stew of crab, shrimp or lobster cooked to order on a 1 to 10 spice scale. Lines of an hour or two are normal. Critics say the shortest waits are around 4am or on weekday mornings around 9:30.

. The bar on Fremont East that calls itself Las Vegas's oldest freestanding bar, serving since 1952; its name dates from patrons watching atomic test flashes from the roof. Expect a big front patio, a local crowd and cheap well drinks, a few blocks from the Fremont Street canopy. It opens at noon daily and gets crowded on weekends and Wednesday trivia nights.

. A 24-hour tiki bar in Chinatown filled with Hollywood memorabilia, known for mai tais and a Dole soft-serve float. Happy hour runs 4pm to 7pm daily and again from 1am to 4am. It's 21+ with physical ID, and Friday and Saturday evening reservations need a prepaid minimum.

Excursion

À éviter, et quoi faire à la place

Skip: spending every night under the Fremont Street canopy. Instead: walk four blocks east to Fremont East. Travelers describe the canopy area as crowded and touristy. Atomic Liquors and the bars around it draw a more local crowd at lower prices.

Skip: booking on the lowest headline rate. Instead: compare the all-in total, including the resort fee. Downtown fees listed by Las Vegas Advisor in July 2025 ran from $0 to $50 a night, before tax: Circa $50, Golden Nugget $46, El Cortez $30, with Four Queens, Binion's and The ENGLiSH Hotel charging none. Strip resorts charge similar fees.

Skip: Strip celebrity-chef dinners every night. Instead: Chinatown on Spring Mountain Road. Local chefs say Spring Mountain Road is where they eat off the clock. It's 5 to 10 minutes by car from the Strip, with soup dumplings, ramen and tiki bars at a fraction of resort prices.

Skip: driving out to without checking. Instead: check sevenmagicmountains.com first. The painted boulder towers south of town are on a land lease that local reporting says runs to the end of 2026, and their future after that is unclear.

Skip: turning up at the at night without a ticket. Instead: book ahead. The museum itself warns that night tours and its Brilliant! Jackpot show can sell out quickly.

Skip: Red Rock Canyon's Scenic Drive without a reservation. Instead: book a timed-entry slot on Recreation.gov. From October 1 to May 31, entry between 8am and 5pm needs a reservation, and the weekend morning slots go first.

Meilleure période pour visiter Las Vegas

Go in March to May or October to early November. Days are mild enough for Red Rock, the Wetlands Park and walking between casinos.

Summer (June to September). Average highs top 100°F. Room rates can be low, but outdoor attractions cut back: closes trails and train rides when heat warnings reach 105°F. Plan hikes for sunrise and museums for the afternoon.

Fall and spring. These are the most comfortable months and the busiest for hiking. Red Rock's timed-entry season runs October 1 to May 31, so book Scenic Drive slots early for weekends.

Winter (December to February). Days are cool and nights can drop below freezing. It's a good season for desert day trips, but New Year's Eve and big holiday weekends push hotel prices up sharply.

Events. Big conventions, fight nights and holiday weekends can double room rates. Before you book, check dates against the event calendar and compare the Sunday to Thursday prices against the weekend.

Se déplacer à Las Vegas

Walk the Strip core, use the Deuce bus or monorail for longer hops, and use rideshare for Chinatown and the at night. Rent a car only for the desert day trips.

Walking. Resorts that look next door can be 15 to 20 minutes apart on foot through casinos and bridges. Travelers underestimate this more than anything else, especially in summer.

The Deuce. RTC's double-decker bus runs 24 hours along the Strip to downtown, about every 15 minutes from 7am to midnight and every 20 minutes overnight. Passes were $6 for 2 hours, $8 for 24 hours and $20 for 3 days when checked in October 2026. Buy them from the machines at stops or in the rideRTC app. It's slow, but a 24-hour pass is much cheaper than a rideshare round trip to Fremont Street.

Las Vegas Monorail. Seven stations on the east side of the Strip, from SAHARA to MGM Grand, open from 7am until midnight to 3am depending on the day. Advance tickets bought online are the only discounted fares. It doesn't reach downtown or the airport.

From the airport. RTC routes connect the airport to the South Strip Transfer Terminal, where you change to the Deuce. Allow extra time for the transfer.

Car. Worth it for Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, Hoover Dam and the . Check hotel parking fees before you commit.

Où loger à Las Vegas

For a first trip, stay mid-Strip for walking or downtown for lower fees; for a food-focused trip, downtown puts you closest to the .

Center Strip. Best for first-timers who want to walk to shows, the Bellagio fountains and the monorail. Expect resort fees on top of the room rate, and compare the all-in totals.

Downtown and Fremont East. Generally cheaper rooms, a walkable cluster of older casinos, and Fremont East and the Arts District nearby. This is where you'll find the no-resort-fee options Las Vegas Advisor listed in July 2025: Four Queens, Binion's and The ENGLiSH Hotel. The Deuce links it to the Strip around the clock.

Off-Strip. Palace Station and the other casinos west of I-15 put you near Chinatown, and the Oyster Bar. You'll need a car or rideshare for most trips.

Où manger et boire à Las Vegas

The best eating in Las Vegas is off the Strip: Chinatown on Spring Mountain Road for Asian food and late nights, and the south of downtown for chef-driven restaurants and bars. Both are 5 to 15 minutes from the Strip by car.

. Soup dumplings in Chinatown; order the xiao long bao and sheng jian bao. It's tiny and takes no reservations.

. A 24-hour, 18-seat counter for the pan roast. Go around 4am or on a weekday morning to cut the line.

. Chef James Trees's Arts District Italian restaurant, at 1131 S. Main Street since 2024. Known for its house sourdough and pastas; Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand.

. Central Texas-style brisket, ribs and burnt ends from a counter on South Main Street, with live music on Friday and Saturday evenings. Closed Mondays.

. The Northern Thai restaurant whose chef won a James Beard Award in 2011. Order the khao soi. Its original Flamingo Road room has been joined by a Sahara Avenue location that opened in May 2026.

. A small Chinatown ramen shop known for thick tonkotsu broth, often called the best-known ramen in the city. Expect a wait for seats.

. A small downtown taco shop on Main Street for street tacos and guisados. Arrive early, because space is tight.

Bars. Start at Atomic Liquors on Fremont East, then try the tiki bars: in Chinatown and on West Charleston, both open 24 hours. on West Sahara arranges classic cocktails by era. Frankie's allows smoking, so expect a smoky room.

Erreurs courantes

Comparing hotel prices without the resort fee. Fees of $30 to $50 a night plus tax are normal. Compare the total at checkout, and look at downtown hotels that don't charge one.

Treating the Strip as walkable. Map distances look short, but resort-to-resort walks take far longer. Use the Deuce or monorail for anything beyond two or three properties.

Arriving at Red Rock without a reservation. From October 1 to May 31, the Scenic Drive needs a timed-entry slot between 8am and 5pm. Book on Recreation.gov, and save the ticket offline because cell service is limited.

Planning outdoor sights for summer afternoons. Trails and outdoor tours close or cancel in extreme heat. Book desert sights for early morning and spend the afternoon at the or .

Expecting off-Strip museums to be open daily. The is closed Monday and Tuesday, and is closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Check the days before building an itinerary.

Eating only on the Strip. Chinatown and the are a short ride away and much cheaper, with what locals consider the city's best food.
