Aperçu
is a 15th-century Inca citadel on a ridge above the Urubamba River in Peru, reached by train to the town of Machupicchu Pueblo (also called ) or on foot via the Inca Trail. It suits travelers who will book ahead: since June 2024 every ticket is for a fixed entry hour on one of three circuits, each split into set routes, and a common complaint from travelers is finding the route they wanted sold out.
This guide is about getting the rules right and then getting away from the crowds. It covers how the circuits, the 2026 ticket trial and Inca Trail permits work, and eight quieter places travelers and local writers keep recommending, from the free storehouses above Ollantaytambo to the site museum and orchid garden at the foot of the mountain that most visitors walk past.
Rules here change often. The Ministry of Culture began a 30-day trial of a new ticket system on 22 September 2026, and the bus concession to the citadel changed hands in 2025 amid protests. Everything below was checked on 11 October 2026, and the official site tuboleto.cultura.pe is the final word on tickets.
À éviter, et quoi faire à la place
Skip: Putucusi mountain. Instead: or Mountain. Older blogs still list the free ladder climb up Putucusi opposite the citadel. Access to the trail has been restricted since 2016 after the ladders were damaged, and there is no confirmation that it has reopened. A ticketed climb inside the site gives you the high view legally.
Skip: planning around a walk-up ticket in high season. Instead: buy online at tuboleto.cultura.pe. About 1,000 tickets a day are sold in person in Machupicchu Pueblo, but in September 2026 only two or three of five planned clerks were working and lines were long.
Skip: a same-day round trip from Cusco. Instead: sleep in Ollantaytambo or . A day trip from Cusco means a very early start, a late return and no slack if the single railway line is disrupted. Ollantaytambo also gives you and for a spare afternoon.
Skip: the Hidroeléctrica walk in the rainy season. Instead: take the train. The budget route (a van to the Hidroeléctrica station, then a walk of roughly three hours along the tracks) was shut by landslides near Mandor in late January and again from 30 March to about 6 April 2026.
Skip: lingering on Aguas Calientes' main strip. Instead: the museum, butterfly house and Mandor. Travelers' most common complaint about the town is that it's an overpriced tourist trap. The quieter sights are a short walk out along the river.
Meilleure période pour visiter Machu Picchu et le chemin de l’Inca
Go from May to October for the driest trails. Avoid February if you want the Inca Trail, which closes that month every year for maintenance.
Dry season (about May to October). Clearer skies and firmer trails, but this overlaps the 2026 high season (19 June to 2 November), when the daily cap rises to 5,600 and popular routes still sell out first.
Rainy season (about November to March, worst December to February). Fewer people and green terraces, but morning cloud often hides the view. Some travelers in the rainy season book a later entry slot, saying the cloud tends to lift by late morning. The railway and the Hidroeléctrica walking route are most at risk of landslides in these months.
Shoulder months. April and late October to early November balance weather and crowds. Note the cap drops to 4,500 a day from 3 November 2026, which makes tickets tighter, not looser.
Time of day. Entry is by hourly slots from early morning to mid-afternoon. Early slots are the most sought after, and arriving late can cost you your slot, so build in a buffer.
Se déplacer à Machu Picchu et le chemin de l’Inca
There's no road to Machupicchu Pueblo: you arrive by train, on foot via a trek, or by van to the Hidroeléctrica station plus a walk along the tracks. From town, a bus or a steep trail takes you up to the citadel.
Train. PeruRail and Inca Rail run from Cusco-area stations and from Ollantaytambo along a single line. Protests and landslides can stop it without notice: in 2025, protests over the bus concession stranded nearly 1,000 tourists in town. Leave a spare day before any international flight.
Bus up to the citadel. The bus takes about 30 minutes. Consettur's three-decade concession ended on 4 September 2025, and the handover to a new operator caused disruption, so check who is running buses and where tickets are sold when you arrive. Expect a queue for early buses.
Walking up. The footpath starts at Puente Ruinas, past the bridge over the Urubamba. It's a steep climb of about 1 hr 40 min. Guards may check your entry ticket at the bridge, and won't let you through more than two hours before your slot.
Hidroeléctrica route. This is the budget option: a long van ride from Cusco, then a walk along the tracks. Take it only in the dry season, and only after checking that the Mandor section is open.
Inside the site. Your ticket fixes a circuit and route that visitors and guides must follow, so you can't wander into parts of the site your route doesn't cover. Choose the circuit for what you want to see, not just the time slot.
Où loger à Machu Picchu et le chemin de l’Inca
Stay in Ollantaytambo for the Sacred Valley and an easy train ride, or in if you want the earliest entry slot.
Ollantaytambo. Ollantaytambo is a lived-in Inca town about an hour by train from , with , and the main ruins on foot. Travelers like it in the evening, after the tour buses leave. At about 2,700 m it is lower than Cusco, so it's a gentler place to acclimatize.
Aguas Calientes (Machupicchu Pueblo). The only town at the foot of the mountain, so it's the practical choice for a first bus or the walking path. Hotel standards vary, so book early and read recent reviews. One or two nights is plenty for most travelers.
Cusco. It works as a base for the region, but a same-day trip to Machu Picchu means a very early start and a late return. Most reports recommend sleeping closer.
Erreurs courantes
Waiting to buy tickets. Routes and slots sell out separately, and the climbs go first. Fix: decide on your circuit and buy on tuboleto.cultura.pe as soon as your dates are fixed. Under the 2026 trial you have 15 minutes to pay.
A name or passport mismatch. Tickets are issued in your name, and names can't be added or changed later. Fix: enter your name and passport number exactly as printed, and bring that same physical passport.
Assuming you can see everything. Each ticket covers one circuit and route. Fix: Circuit 1 (Panoramic) includes the upper-terrace route, Circuit 2 (Classic) a designed route and a lower-terrace route, and Circuit 3 (Royalty) its own designed route plus the climb. Pick the circuit for the views you want.
Leaving the Inca Trail too late. About 500 people a day are allowed on the trail, guides and porters included, and only about 200 of them are trekkers. Fix: book through a licensed operator months ahead, and ask about the Quarry Trail (no permit needed) or the one-day trail as backups.
Underestimating the altitude. The citadel sits at about 7,972 ft (2,430 m), Mountain reaches about 10,000 ft and Dead Woman's Pass on the Inca Trail is 4,215 m. Fix: spend a couple of nights in the Sacred Valley before any big hike.
Forgetting the small things. Travelers repeatedly mention biting insects at ankle height, sudden rain and toilets only at the entrance. Fix: wear long trousers and closed shoes, pack a rain shell, and use the bathroom before you go in. Bring a small daypack, since large bags must go in the lockers.
No buffer for the train. A single railway line serves the town. Fix: don't book a flight out of Cusco on the day of your visit.

FAQ : Machu Picchu et le chemin de l’Inca
Do I need a guide for Machu Picchu?
On the Inca Trail, yes: you must hike with a licensed operator and a guide. For the citadel, the 2026 Ministry of Culture notices reviewed for this guide do not spell out a guide rule, while some older reports describe guides as mandatory. Hire a licensed guide at the entrance or in advance, and follow the circuit on your ticket.
Can I buy Machu Picchu tickets at the gate?
No. Tickets are sold at tuboleto.cultura.pe and in limited numbers (about 1,000 a day) at an office in Machupicchu Pueblo, not at the entrance. In high season, in-person tickets can run out and the lines are long.
Which circuit should I choose?
Circuit 1 covers the upper terraces (plus Mountain, the and the Inca Bridge as separate routes). Circuit 2 (Classic) has a designed route and a lower-terrace route. Circuit 3 (Royalty) has its own designed route plus the , Great Cavern and routes. The Sun Gate, Inca Bridge, Great Cavern and Huchuy Picchu routes run only in high season.
When do Inca Trail permits sell out?
Permits for the June to August peak often go months ahead, so operators advise booking five to six months out. The 2026 permits went on sale between 17 and 25 November 2025, and the trail is closed every February.
Is Aguas Calientes worth staying in?
For an early entry, yes. It's the only town at the foot of the mountain. Travelers often call the main strip overpriced, but the hot springs (open from 5am), the site museum, the butterfly house and Mandor make a night there worthwhile.
